custom side mirror turn signals

custom side mirror turn signals since so many people have M3 styled mirrors on their cars and those chevron shaped led lights on their mirrors, i was wondering if it is possible to stick a bunch of leds or neon tubes behind the mirror itself and let the light shine thru the slits between the mirror and it's casing.. how visible would that be? can it be easily done? would the bulbs/tubes block the motorized motion of the stock mirrors?
