Can't play CD-R?
I bought my dad an OEM cd player to replace the cassette unit in my dad's van. The cd unit plays only original cds and non of the cd-r. I don't get it, aren't they the same kind? Is there anything I can do to make the cd player play cd-r?
Hi Dalaw,
You might be SOL. About a year ago, when I had the 99 Civic, I had a hard time playing music burned on CD-Rs via the Mac. The burnt discs were very inconsistent. It would sometimes play, but after maybe 5-10 seconds of whirring like it was trying to read it. I thought it was either my Mac system or a physical issue, i.e., the CD burner was bad, but I came to the conclusion that it most likely was because of the OEM CD player wasn't recent enough the handle CD-Rs. This was solidified by the fact that when I moved onto a 01 Civic, the OEM stock CD player had no problem playing those burn discs that were giving my 99 civic. Of course, as you mentioned, the older civic had no problem playing original or commercially produced CDs. Anyway, if the OEM CD player in your dad's van is 99 or older, chances are it has the same issue as I delinated. One way to check to see if it's isolated to that OEM CD player is to try playing those same CD-Rs on a late CD player. I suspect it's most likely that your stock OEM has it's limitation by the fact that it has no problem of playing originals.
Hope this helps.

wtf... Rennen's translation for that long *** story:
a lot of older cd players have a hard time reading cd-r's. its just the way it is. get a newer aftermarket deck.

Chill out Rennen,
What you're stating is the conclusion I was making if you bothered to read. I was just explaining my experiences and tried to give some pointers in case this wasn't the case, since he never stated what year that OEM CD player is. For all we know, that could be a late OEM CD player he installed and if that's the case, it could be couple other problems. I was just trying to be systematic in isolating what the problem might be. Hence, the suggestion that he try playing the CD-R on another late CD player to isolate where the problem lies.

I actually read thru gospeedgo's reply. It was very helpful. My dad has a 96 plymouth voyager, and the year of the oem cd unit is unknown and which vehicle it was pulled from is unclear, but cannot be newer than 2000 thats for sure. Thanks guys!

ok , disreguard everything you have just read:
before burning the disc , check to see what type of file the songs are. to do this right click the song go to get info , make sure it is a AAC audio file, if it is an MP3 file or AN mpeg-4 File convert it in itunes. then go to itunes preferences and go to burning and make sure your settings are set for an audio cd and not a data or mp3 cd. then burn the cd 17-18 songs and i gurantee a working cd.
