Lowering Issue...O.o
Lowering Issue...O.o
Alrighty I gots one for you. The shop at Earnhardt Nissan lowered my car for me (actually a few buddies of mine that work in the shop). It was done very well except for one thing. Now that I drive I get a slight clunking on the passanger side of the vehicle. I checked everything for tightness and found nothing wrong. Could this be the result of a misalignment? It's getting an alignment this week..I checked CV shafts and boots as well. No riped boots no spilled grease...any clues? Subarus FTW I do NOT miss my civic

its normal for clunking on lowered cars, when turning at least. not when driving straight. You could put a coil wrap of some sort on the springs to help out.

Before you disassemble the strut, you need to mark the top and bottom to insure you line them up correctly when putting them back together. If you're working on a 2002+ model, the top mount should already be marked with an L or R (for left and right) and an arrow pointing in the direction it should be facing when it goes back on the car. If the top and bottom are not put together correctly the bolts will not line up in the strut tower (this is important). If the marks aren't there, just use some white-out or a marker. This insures that the springs are properly indexed when you reinstall them and that they seat properly into place against the rotation stop on the lower seat and the bearing lines up properly with the upper mount. In addition, if you properly install the spring and continue to experience a popping sensation, you need to inspect the bearings especially if you mess up and the bearings blow all over your garage floor. I recommend that once removed from the strut, you open up the bearing and add some lithium or graphite based lube into the bearing race then close the bearing back up. Before reinstalling, rotate the bearing with your hand to insure that it moves freely and the grease is worked around the *****. Then, re-install the upper seat and bearing assembly properly indexed and bolt the assembly together with the proper torque of 45 lb-ft. I understand this is typically impossible with the allen key, but if you get a crows-foot you will be able to properly torque the nut. If its too tight, it binds and pops. If its too loose, it wabbles and the races don't seat, the ***** are free to bounce and it pops.

my guess, its spring chatter aka coil slap, sounds like an std doesnt it? lol, if it is its just inherint of lowering springs, most of them do it, nuespeed in particular is notorious for it (yes i know my spelling sucks). its basically the "dead" coils on the upper wind, that slap together when expanded and compressing, if it is slap, then just look at the coils see about what size they are, 1" .5" etc, and go to home depot pepboys whatever, and get some black wire loom, then just wrap it around the dead coils should shut them up. At least it has for my cars when they had lowering springs....

probably should have it aligned anyway....
I'd check tie rod boots if you hear it when you're turning. i had a bad clunk/rattle coming from mine that ended up being the nut at the top of the strut loose.

I had the same issues. I had to tighten the top bolts that mounted the shock to the car, and the second time after i replaced the shox i had to tighten the screw at the base of the strut. I dont know about the 01-02, but for the 03-04 you need to cut the OEM strut in order to install new shox, did you cut to low if you also had to cut?
did you make sure that the new set up was installed the same as the old. all left side components need to stay on the left side, same for the right. if you think its just the springs poping, you might need to place a plastic tube around them. does it pop, clunk or slam when you drive-ie the sevarity of the noise. also, do you have the inserts or was it a direct install? if you had the inserts, was it a tight fit or loose

Just bought some Eibach Sportlines and it came with a plastic tube around the top few coils of the spring.
In the process of installing it now. Might be back in this thread in a few days if I started getting sounds.
