what oil do you use on your turbo engine?
what oil do you use on your turbo engine?
i was told to go with 5w40 or 10w30, possibly even 10w40......what do you use and for the experts out there what do you recommend?
oh and im going with royal purple

I usually try to use it "in" my engine, not "on" it. LMAO. I use 10-30 and havent had a problem. Going too thick can be as harmfull as too thin. I basically played around with a few different wieghts till I found what oil seems to be near the same viscosity after running hard on boost as what it was before the boost. Factory weight oil seemed like water after a few good rips, I dont think thats good. I could be wrong, hehe.

depends on the clearances on your bearings.
If they use the stock spec clearances while assembling your motor (or you have a built motor), then use the stock weight oil. Anything heavier could cause damage.
I know i broke a piston in my old motor, but when i tore the motor down i was suprised to find out that one of my rod bearings was completely destroyed. It had not spun, but it was missing all of the copper bearing surface, and looked like somebody forced the bearing material off with a chisel. I was using 10w40

I was surprised as hell to find out that my 4g63-Turbo Eagle actually reccomends 20w-40 in temperatures above 32F....Not saying that's what you should use though. I would think maybe some 5w40 would be good for the D17.

I still use factory recomended oil. Is it 5W20??
I always use Castrol GTX in all cars I've ever owned.
In my opinion, unless you plan racing hard, then factory kind should be good.

1. 14.3
2. not stock
3. right now its being rebuilt.
4. time was with a **** hole tune by a **** hole shop.
5. i dont know why i even claim that time based on the shitty tune.
6. the new rebuild will include: je pistons, new rings, crower rods. track date is still to be determined.

dont change your oil soo often. It can do more harm than good.
I was sceptical, but read an article about how Mobil1 synthetic lasted 17,000 miles in an LS1 before they absolutely had to change it. Every 1000 miles they had the oil analyzed.
I think that 3000 miles is too often. You have to remember, every time you change your oil, you will have a dry start because your oil filter is empty and has to be filled in order to make pressure.
Im just paranoid about oil now since i took my last motor apart and found that destroyed bearing.
Next time i go to my parents house, i will post the pictures of the bearing. It will make you think twice before listening to people on the internet.
I highly suggest doing a bunch of research about oils. Word of mouth is what almost got my last motor trashed. If i wouldnt have broken a piston, i would have had to junk the crank due to that bearing. I was actually lucky that i broke my pistons, because i was able to salvage the crank.

I change oil between 4-5000mi.
My philosophy aboit is if way back 20-30 yers ago recomended oil change was 5000mi, then why with all advances in r&d, filtering, production, of oil you need to change it more often now? I see it as BS. Its all about marketing and crowd control. People will listen to commercials, so cash kings can get more $.....

yep they say every 3k to change your oil just so they make money. I usually do it every 4-4.5k miles just because i do a lot of city driving and it really doesn't hurt the pockets too much. I use 10w-30 royal purple.

everybody feels uneasey about it because of Market Branding and Improper Information spread by manufacturers.
If you feel uneasy about it, go read your owners manual and find out when HONDA says you should change your oil.

well im not all about running the oil till its too thin, i like to keep it fresh, it is good. as for the no oil start, there will still be oil on the surfaces to lubricate it unless you wait hours and hours to drain it, and you only have about 2 seconds without oil pressure for it to get through the filter. i normally put a fourth of a quart in the filter before i start the oil change, that lets it absorb in.
as for 3k being bs, maybe true to a level. but it all depends what motor, your driving style, what oil, and engine life. and advancements in R$D has helped because now we have synthetic oil lasting 10k and supposedly 15 but i dunno if id try that.
theres no problem in changing it too often, as long as your letting it break down a lil before you do. and yes honda says 5k but thats with a honda filter and the oil they use/recoomend.
and a good example, my last car, a jeep. i changed it every 3k and i HAD TOO! there were metal shavings in it left and right like you wouldnt believe, and the oil was super thin. now with my civic at 3k its still relatively viscous but i feel satisfied not letting it break down more.
