The plastic piece around and behind the factory cam gear. Does this serve any actual functioning purpose or is it just there to mount the cam gear cover on to? Thanks for the help.

the sensor is in the bottom corner, you can see it in the picture. i am thinking it is just the back cover for the cam gear, am i right? it wouldnt hurt if i leave it off, would it? since i dont plan on putting the front cover back on either so i can adjust the timing easily with my aem cam gear....

i think he is talking about oil and debris coming from the block. the cover only protects it from outside debris.
