I need Painting help....
Ok i already made a mistake....I painted my center console a dark blue.....it looked nice...but the problem was that it scratched off really easy...i mean really easy (cheap paint i think) I have Paint Stripper and want to strip it down and do it over.....but i dont know the "proper" way to paint the piece
Do i use primer?? Wat Kind??
Do i have to sand it???
What kind of Paint would you recommend??
I dont want to go through all the painting again if it will scratch off just as easy

Use a high grit sand paper to sand off the existing paint. Specifically you'll want to use 800 - 1000 grit sand paper and you have to keep water applied. (You'll be wet sanding).
After you wet sand and rough the surface up, wearing latex gloves, use a cotton rag or cotton ball plus rubbing alcohol and wipe down the whole surface (this is so that you remove any grease or oils from it). Let it dry.
You can paint using spray cans, you just have to use many coats and let each coat dry before you spray another one.
Use a good primer. I have found that plasti-kote has a good sandable filler primer that sprays on thick so you can fill in any small scratches or knicks and sand it. After 2 or 3 coats of the primer use the wet sanding method to smooth out any orange peel or texture you dislike. Once the primered surface is to your liking, use the alcohol again to remove any grease or oils.
Repeat the above process with 2 or 3 coats of the color paint you wish to use. Obviously automotive paint and the color you would like. Now if you get any kind of flaws in the paint and need to sand it down, you should be able to use 1000 grit w/o any bad scratches showing. A good trick to keep in mind is if you pool water over a spot your sanded, then how you see it through the water is how it will look with the clear sprayed on it. If 1000 is leaving visible scratches, use 1500 or 2000 grit. Keep in mind you don't have to apply a lot of pressure with these high grit papers, but keep your surface wet!!
Finally use a clear coat to seal in your paint. 2 - 3 coats of the spray can will be nice. If you have some flaws in the clear, you can wet sand it with 2000 grit sand paper but you will need a decent buffer (not an orbital buffer, but a variable speed buffer (professional) with compounds and waxes.
If any of this is inaccurate or is too much work, I'm sure someone will be around shortly to correct me.
