Which Struts? KYB or Tokico

02' Civic LX. Front Struts are shot. Not looking for anything special, but decided to come to the experts. Narrowed it down to two:

Tokico "Blues"
or
KYB GR-2

Not lowering the car, just looking for somthing that will last a long time.

Any help is appreciated,

TIA,

Nate

So I buy the strut online and take it to my local mechanic. Will I need to purchase anything else for the install?

TIA,

Im getting the struts installed at by mechanic this friday. Its costing me $100 for both front struts. I bought the KYB GR2's online at http://www.autopartswarehouse.com. Call them, they have it for $220 shipped.

I can tell you how it feels once they install it friday morning.

Does anyone know if Tokico or KYB ever plans on making struts for the 03+ civics with the 16 mm holes?

drill the 14mm holes out with a step drill bit.

im alittle dissapointed in the Tokicos stiffness. They are much softer then i thought. Why not consider the KYB AGX's?

Expensive, don't need the adjustment. Been through 2 sets of stock struts, want something a little more durrable.

Both would be nice, but I don't want to pay $400 for two struts. I drive to work and school. Once a year I go on a road trip, ~1500 miles round trip. My car is nothing special - everything is stock. 45,000 miles on the car and been through 2 sets of struts.

I don't know why? I don't drive hard, I slow down for bumps. My previous Saturn had struts with ~160,000 miles on them! When I sold it, they still had some life. WTF? I think Honda just bought bad struts for this model year. Some have said they were under specked. So here are my choices:

Pay $250 per each Honda strut (including install) at the dealership, plus alignment at 79.00
Total $579+tax

Or

Buy better struts online for about $120 per strut and have local mechanic install for ~$100 (for both - Guess on install price) +$49 alignment

Total $389+tax -- $190 cheaper and from what I hear, I won't have to change them for a long time.

I'm also in the exact same boat as you Nate.

'01 Civic EX Sedan - still on the original struts. Totally stock setup still. probably need front and rear and don't really want to use Monroe (even though they have all the specials running lately)

Tokico Blues sound like the winner to me from all the stuff I've read. Now the question is where is the cheapest place either online or near Riverside, California to get those. Also, anyone here locally to Riverside/SoCal want to make a few extra bucks by putting them on for me?

Also, I think my CV joint front left is starting to go. Is there any advantage to get the struts fixed before the CV joint or vice versa? Should I try to get them fixed at the same time?

"Thump" when you turn the wheel to one side? Mine did the same thing, CV joint was good - Just a loose tie rod (or that's what the dealership said) tightened it down and it went away.

Good luck man.

you just answered your own Q search around on here usually a good deal for tokicos (all4) can be had for like 400 and you wont worry about having to change backs later on either....

treat your suspension like its a full set of tires that are going bald on you...or rather wearing out on you from the up and down movement....best to do everything at once if you can afford it cuz its cheaper to do it all at once then having a problem rear its head because you wanted to save a few bux now

i wouldn't say it's a "thump" as much as it is a "clicking". not constant though. I don't have to be turning to hear it either. somewhat random. maybe more than 1 issue going on? damn I need a local Honda guru to look at this!

edit: is this a good deal for a full set of Tokico blues? http://www.streetlevelperformance.co...ull%20Set.html

I found that www.tirerack.com, just checked website and they raised their price--shiet, had the best price on KYB AGX by quite a bit and they sell tokico, I got a set of AGX locally and installed myself. They are great on the #1 setting. I love them. I also had KYB GR2 in another honda, they were too light. I wish i had experience with the tokico so i knew how they compared to KYB. <<2cents>>

What do you mean by too light? Compress too easy? How do they compair to factory?

They were MUCH better than factory, but in an extreme turn they would sway too much. And maybe that is because the vehicle had no sway bars! It was a complete stock LX. I forgot about that. Then really in that case, I think the GR2 were superb. They will make you feel like you are driving a cadilac. really, if you are into a smooth ride, these shocks provide that.

Just got my car back yesterday morning. I've been procrastinating on changing out the blown struts for such a long time. Now that my struts are working again I can certainly feel less ounce whenever I go over a pothole and speed bump. These are slightly stiffer then stock but still provide a comfortable ride. I would recommend GR-2's.

I had that same problem as you, I'm on my third set of shocks.. They were all covered under warranty but this is starting to get a little ridiculous. I'm looking at the AGXs as well but they do seem a bit over priced?
