Dash painting Help!

I saw the DIY on painting the dash but I was wondering if there would be any flaking problems? Also is there a specific brand of paint or clear coate that anyone reccomends?

your best route would be to dye it. that way you wouldn't have to worry about flaking.

a dye will actually change the pigment of the paint, meaning it wont flake unless the dyed peice itself comes apart. what parts of the dash are you planning on painting? i just did my interior this weekend.

if your going to dye it then go look at the dye on clubrsx. I found it on another website for about 6 a can. If your going to do your interior black then just go to a salvage yard and get the parts. It's alot easier in the long run.

If your just going black, use Krylon Fusion paint. They make a flat black and a glossy black. It is specific for bonding to plastic. After 7days it is completly chip proof and wont fade. Just make sure you get the part totally clean. No priming or sanding needed, unlike the VHT. For the dash pad though, you will need to dye it, but SEM makes a glossy black dye that matches perfectly with the Krylon. http://www.krylon.com/main/product_t...roduct_details its like 5 bucks a can. you can get it at most automotive stores and home depot or lowes.

what do you think of blue and silver?? Do you think I can still make it look good? I will be changing the headliner and the carpeting as well to mtch the dash and the exterior. I think it will give it a clean yet custom look.

I know someone on here has done their dash blue. I forget their name though. When I dyed mine, the headliner was very simple but the floor carpet requires a lot of dye and even then you might still run into a little fading. Since I'm usually the only person in my car I dont worry about it too much. My floor mats protect the carpet pretty good

I am just going to replace my carpet and headliner The carpet I have in there now is used and faded a bit. So do you think I should just paint it like some of the other people are saying or dye it?

i painted mine over the weekend, dash and all, it came out really well. but its a pain to do because its so tedious. it definetly took a long time though.the back half of the car was easy (coupe) and the dash wasnt too bad to get out, 10000X easier than any other car ive ever done.

if your gonna go through and paint the dash first sand the dash down with some 180 grit sand paper, spray and adhesion promotor, primer, and sand the primer 3-4 coats should do it. Depending on how smooth the primer is usually start with 180 if its rough and go throught and sand with 220. 320 and then you can wet sand with 400 if you go the the primer at all add a couple more coats...as for brand or anything like that...I don't have any preference i've used dupont vinyl/fabric paint and had good results, other people like the way acrilycs lay down it just depends on the texture and look you're goin for

thats a good plan, but one problem is the dash pad is covered in vinyl so you cant sand it. if you just clean the plastic completely, you shouldnt have to sand at all. keep in mind, when sanding plastic, it sometimes has a habit of splintering and becomes hard to smooth out.
