state the car is registered or state i reside

My car is registered in NY, but i am in the navy and living in VA. I am aloud to do this bc i am in the military. My question is about smalls thigns such as turn signal color and such.

I haven't really looked into it but it seems that VA laws are good deal stricter than NY. I want to know if the laws for these things go by the state that the car is registered in or the state that I reside in.

My legal residence is NY but, i live in VA.

It is the state it resides in. Although you may have a little bit aof leniency (sp) You do have to abide by the laws regardless of where you are located and where you registered the car.

But they do have to abide by the laws of whatever city that they are in. Question wasn't about registering the vehicle, it was about abiding by a more strict law somewhere other than their orignal registration location. They do not have to change their registration, but in living in this new city, if they are breaking a law, they do have to abide by the city ordinance.

They do not worry about tints or things like color of blinkers when its out of state plates.
You cannot get a tint violation in cali if your from MD and it is legal in MD. This is why cops do not get into it, usually.

Moving violations, yes! Vehicle violations, no!

its all in the way the cop is feeling he could still pull you over and give you a warning about their laws and want you to abide by them as much as possible, but i highly doubt you would get hassled much with having out of state plates, just tell the cop you just got stationed there. suck up the military benefits as much as possible i got out of getting a ticket going 37 mph over the speed limit.

are you in the navy in norfolk?? im navy in kings bay GA

Once you are out of the military you have 20 days to reregister the car to your permanent location. now, if you have the car in your pop's name in a different state and drive it in another, then when you're pulled over make sure to say that you are borrowing the car and that you've had it less than 20 days.
