well i have that size tires on 17x7 on kumho exscta, and i wish i had bigger tires, since with this size being too small, youll get wrong speed judgement. so i'd suggest some bigger tires if you can, im tryin to get some more tires, i want the 215/45/17. i think itll be smoother and potholes wont be as dangerous if you dont avoid them.

Since you already have the tires I suggest you just go with them until they wear out. Then you can decide if you want something bigger. I currently have 205/40-17 Kumhos and they are fine, but I might go to a 215/45-17 when these wear out. Like the others said, just be careful with potholes and where you drive.

205-45-17's are the best bet out there, and closest overall dia. to stock. They are the perfect amount of rubber, not too bulky. 205-40-17's suck, especially if your on stiffer springs, I like to call them wagon wheels.

I think half of the people who are running 17" are using 205/40/17 mainly due to its affordibility and because its a little thinner. It should be definately safe. If you want 205/45/17, then plan on spending more than 215/45/17, since 205/45 is not really a common size.
I got 215/45/17 because it's pretty affordable, and i like it a little thicker.

205/40/17 - more of the show look and horrible without drop
205/45/17 - perfect for daily driver whose looking for aftermarket wheels for looks and not performance
215/40/17 - leaning more to the performance and street size
215/45/17 - still looks somewhat good with no drop, doesnt give a **** about performance, just want fat sidewall for rim protection and whatnot.

I've had 205/40-17's for 2 years now. The ride is a bit harsh and wish I had 45's. But to answer yr question they are OK meaning they're safe and so far have held up on rough roads. Keep tire preasure above 36 psi to protect rims.
^just about any car with larger wheels would give your vehicle a harder time to push the wheels to move. inertia or something like that, i think its in the sticky faq page.
depending on which 17s you get, some can affect your acceleration/mileage depending on weight, material, size, etc. in general, cast rims (rota/adr/rh evo/velox/etc) are more heavier than forged/multi-piece/3-pc/etc rims in general.
