one size up in sidewide?

right now i have 205/50/15 tires, i'm trying to get a smoother ride out of my car so i'll be raising it up about an inch and getting tires with a wider sidewall. how much thicker is it when you step up from a 205/50 to a 205/55? i compared the tires i have now to my stock firestones (205/65/15) and its like more than a inch in size, and i dont want to get a tire TOO big so it looks funny. what would be a good size for a smooth ride and look good?
