Tint Law Question for a Unique Situation ...
Tint Law Question for a Unique Situation ...
Say I am a resident of NY, and I find a car I'd like to purchase in FLA. The car in FLA has very dark tint which is legal in FLA, but obviously illegal in my residence state of NY. After I purchase the car and bring it back to NY, do I have to have all the windows replaced to accomodate the NY tint laws?
If anyone has (or knows of someone who has) experienced a similar situation, can you please enlighten me on the proper procedures (i.e., am I exempt from the NY tint laws due to the fact that the car was purchased in FLA?)
Thanks in Advance.

you dont need to replace the windows, you either need to remove the tint and replace it with lighter tint, or just take it off and leave it off. you wont be exempt from NY laws even if you lived in florida and visited NY. once that car enters new york, you are under NY laws.
This may be dumb, and perhaps I'm wrong ... but I was under the impression that a 5-series BMW in FLA does not have "peelable tint". I thought that the window was permanently tinted. If that's the case, are you saying I have to get all 5 windows replaced?

you guys are wrong. Whatever license plate is on the car, that's the law you follow. I have nevada plates. Tint on front windows in Illinois is illegal, in Nevada its 35%. Guess what I have, 35% and will never be hassled. A cop tried once and immediately drove off after seeing the plates.

you won't have to replace windows. Either the tint comes off, or you say the tint is on it from the factory (you then become exempt because the tint can't be removed anyway).

In Cali factory tinted windows are the only tint allowed in the front driver and passenger sides. Not sure what the laws are in NY but how dark are the windows? They got those shaded windows like the Benz has that blueish shade? So factory ok
Edit: Gearbox beat me to it.

Well if it's not peelable then there's nothing you can do about it. I'm not sure about NY laws but in cali as long as it came from the factory that way it's fine. And i'm sure NY would make you change your plates once you gotta register the car again if you haven't already.

NY State is if the windows are factory tinted in the driver/pass then its fine, other wise its 70% the 2 back doors (if 4door) and the back window can be as dark 0%

There is no law that says you have to switch registration. I'm "visiting" for 5 years while I goto school. But as far as your tint, just make sure its not film and then you'll be fine. If its film, you're gonna have to remove it if you register in NY

accordimg to law of you have plates from a different state and get pulled for tint they cannot do anything to you about it because you live and are registered in the other state. But once you register it say in NY then you have to peel the tint or have it replaced with lighter tint
to clear things up, all vehicles after 1970(?) have 95% tint on all the windows (exclude front). benz/bmw/porsche use the fancy blue, honda/acura/toyota uses the unique green, etc etc. you cant see it, but if you look closely, its there. im sure it is labeled on the window as well, most likely the backseat windows.
to the thread starter, if its illegal in NY, if you have the plates from FL, the officer would understand as you just bought the car. he or she will most likely warn you to remove the tint. but when the NY plates come in, you are required by law to remove them as NY laws will be applied to you in your situation.
when u pick the car up from FL and drive i tto NY. IF you get pulled for it, tell the officer you just bought the car. he or she would tell you that you have a certain time period to get NY plates and get all the paperwork settled then remove the tint(s). its pretty much a warning that you should be aware of. if you dont want to get hassled at all, have the tint removed by a shop. for 2 front windows, it should be no where more than $30.
for futher specific procedures, call your local police station.

I thought that Out-of-State cars driven in California are required to be in compliance with the CA Tint law...

Yes, my car had 20% tint all around since 1991, which is legal since it was installed before the WY tint law changed. Although, legal in CO is 30% tint, I just redid the side windows in 15%. That percent is illegal in WY too, oops
