How many miles after the gas light comes on?
How many miles after the gas light comes on?
I find myself driving more and more with my gas light on lately because im sort of scrapped for cash money. Sometimes it gets to the point that i feel like im going to run out of gas and have to backpack home. Just the other day i got lost in Santa Ana with practically no gas, but made it home safe. Im just wondering how many miles i have left when the light comes on? Anybody know? 10 miles, 20 miles maybe 30? I also noticed that i put 3 bones of gas in my car and the gas gauge didnt move at all, its pretty much BELOW the line.

For my si, it has 13 gallon gas tank.
Light comes on at when 3 gallons are left on the gas tank.
Theoricallyi could probably drive around 80 miles after light.
Just too risky and i would never do that.

i always wait til the light comes on. If your sender is working, that means 2-3gallons remain. A broken fuel sender will trip the light when there's 5-6 gallons left out of 13.

usually theres 2.5 gallons to 3 gallons left one the light goes on. but there was this time after my battery died that the light didnt go on till the tank was nearly empty. nearly empty as in, i pumped in 12.5 gallons into the tank when the light went on. the sedan and coupe tank is 13.2 gallons.

I think it is 13.2 gallons. ( ? )
I noticed that the low fuel light comes on very early on the Civics.
I have also read that the fuel pump is cooled by the gas in the tank ( ? ) So it is not a good idea to run tank low.
I too have a bad habit of running until the light comes on.
Edited for correct capacity.

the fuel light comes on early in all cars so that fools wont drive to the point where the tank is actually empty. also its pointless to have a low fuel warning light if it told you, you were out of gas. by then, its not much of a warning youre low on gas, more of a statement that you have no gas.
i am not aware of the cooling issues.

My '84 honda accord did the same thing. This light would come on with 3+ gallons in the fuel tank. I figure it's decision Honda made way way back, maybe a gas shortage strategy from the 70's (pulled that one out of my ***).

My light came on once in the middle of Kansas at about 1 in the morning. I made it 85 miles to the next open gas station. I have a feeling that was pushing it a bit though.

They need to make it so the light blinks or something when ur alittle low, then stays on when you HAVE to get gas. I like how some SUVS and cars have "miles until empty" that way you know how long you can go and stuff

I've gone ~97 miles with the gas light on. I was on the highway in between Evansville, IN and St. Louis, MO and(some of you may know this, I didn't until that night) there is nothing in between the two places. I was getting scared close to the end.

wow you guys are lucky ... i'm sure that my sender is broken =( i can bearly pull like 10-20 miles before my car starts "puttering" into stop, and that's with the empty light on, of course.
total times i've run out of gas w/o knowing: 1 =( worst day ever

of course it also depends on the exact gas type your using, the climate your driving at, and a few other variables. so keep in mind that. But me, myself i got about 40 miles one time before i decided to fill. I knew it was shitty running the car completely empty so i just used that as a stopping point. Which i think was good, because shortly after, i noticed the RPM's (automatic LX sedan, 2002 BTW) started getting higher. so for example my car might be going 50 mph at 2500rpm but i was noticing it go up in the 3k and 4k thats when i knew it was about to die on me, lol.
