Question for all turboed people?
I am just curious, how many of you with turbos let your car idle for about 5-10 min. before you turn it off? or do you just turn the car off after driving?

if you drive normally, i dont think you need to let it idle. and if you do, 1-2 minutes is sufficient. On the other hand, if you drive hard, youd want to let it idle for a good 10 minutes.

the reason why it is reccomended that you let a turboed car cool down after running, is not to let the engine cool. it is to let the turbo cool. The best thing to do is to purchase a turbo timer. It allows your car to continue to run when you walk away from it, which in turn is circulating fresh oil through the turbo to help cool it down. Not letting your car idle after driving just lets Hot oil sit in your turbo which can ruin the seals...

The point of leaving the car on is to push enough oil through the turbo to cool it down some. Some. Not all. 30 seconds is enough, after a track run, 45 seconds and then turn the motor off and the fans on. I have an oil temp gauge and have watched it on cooldown, and if you leave your motor on for more than 1 min, you will be heating the turbo up more because you are no longer getting air flow over your motor and the hood turns the engine bay into an oven.
From tests using a laser pyrometer (temperature gauge thingy for those who don't know) on the turbo housing, and the oil temp gauge with the sender at the oil return line, this is what I found to be the best year round:
For daily driving, 30 seconds is more than plentiful.
For a drag race pass, driving back through the timing shack to your parking space and then another 30 seconds, shut it off, pop your hood and turn on your fans. A manual switch is great for this.
For road racing or endurance, drive back to the paddock, let run for 1 min, then turn off, pop hood, place fans in front of car, turn on car fans, and wait 5 min.
i've got a question, what about when you go fill up on gas AND have a turbo timer? your car will be running while your putting in gas, that doesn't sound too safe? is that the way it works?

Most turbo timers have an override button that shuts the car off immediately.
10 minutes is excessive, run synthetic and water cool the turbo and don't worry about it at all. If you insist on turbo timing it, run it for 1-2 minutes.

I set my turbo timer for about 40 seconds. I rewired some stuff, and need to fix it though, hehe. I figured it would do what it did when I rewired that sh**. But oh well.
40 seconds should be good. It should cool down by then. Getting gas sucks. Since you have to wait, but if you want to override it, a lot of turbo timers come with a ebrake override thing. Where you put the ebrake down and it shuts the car off. I think its to prevent theft, but they wouldnt get very far when it would cut off in 40 sec anyways. haha. Getting gas hella sucks for me, I have to reset all my settings for the ICU EVERY time I turn the car on. sucks a pain in my *** to wait 5-7 minutes everytime.

I use a turbo timer on mine. If I have to get gas I just shut off my car before I pull up the e-brake so my turbo timer doesnt come on as long as I havent been driving it hard.

The only thing I like about TSIs is their turbo timer. Are you saying you have to turn it on every time you want it to stay work? Doesnt make sense.
So is your kit working out nicely for ya bradmanuwf

even friends with supras that have turbo timers dont let their car idle for more than 2 mins, and you know how hard they can drive their cars...normally id say a min or less is sufficient
