Automatic gears?
Hey guys. I was wondering what the importance of D3 and D2 are for in our cars? any racing importance in a drag? I think if you shift to 3rd you rev higher but fill me in on like situations for using D3 AND D2. Thanks
D less power more speed
D2 more power and less speed for instance, for when you are towing a jetski down here in miami
D3 most power and least speed, this is for when you go on freaking mountain expeditions
but anyways, i have seen people with auto's that use drive, then shift it down to D2 for a quick boost and then shift it back to D
it helps , but not much

They're for shifting basically. An automatic transmiton is hydraulically engaged and disengaged, unlike sychro's and a clutch in a manual transmition. Let's say you're racing: you start out in D2, then wait till you can hear the transmition shift into the second gear and into higher rpm's. Then you shift to D3, then D. You only have four gears to work with, so your car will still be slower than a manual, but not by that much.
Again, to recap: start out in D2, push the pedal to the metal. Hear it rev to around 6,000, then hear it shift back down to around 4,000, then wait till it's at 6,000 or so, then shift into D3, then wait till it's at 6,000rpm again, then shift into D. Now just ride it all the way home. That's the way it's done.

I'm not sure if the "2" and "D2" are the same, but as far as my knowledge goes, 2 starts in 2nd gear, so it has less torque for starting in places where first has too much torque and spins the tired. then D3 only uses the first 3 geards and D4 as all 4 gears.

All of the above are true and...
D2 can be great in that crawling rush hour traffic to keep your car from hunting for gears and jumping uneccesarily through the transmission. This was the very reason i chose AUTO over MANUAL. AUTOMATICS are built to deal with traffic better. Yeah, I know performance suffers in the end but sitting in traffic avery morning I'd rather be able to concentrate on driving and the idiots around me than on letting my clutch out every 2 seconds cause some jerk in front of me's riding his brake.

I've never really used D3 or 2. so its safe to shift into those while driving. I always wanted to try doing it, but was afraid of screwing something up. I will have to mess around with it sometime to see what it does. I did read in my manual that you can use D3 if you are going downhill. it says to shift into that instead of riding the break and building up heat on the brakes. rambling now. peace.

Yeah, I think it's ok to shift down into those gears. I think I read it in the manual somewhere. I always use D2 though. Havent tried using D3 though.
i'm jsut the oppisite... I use d3 and harly ever use d2... i seem to take off better w/ d3. D3 jsut seems to happen cause i press in the putton then pull all the way down adn it jsut seems to stop at D3... if i am paying attention or have someone in the car then i jsut stop at D but when i am alone I like to hear the engine rev a little higher than 4000 that way I can hear my intake
