Steering wheel w/o air bag = illegal?

well, I'm thinking about getting an aftermarket steering wheel (not sure which one), but I also want to put a quick release hub on there ... it's a pretty good theft deterrent

as most of us know, none of the aftermarket steering wheels have airbags in them ... so ...

are airbagless steering wheels illegal?

well seeing as that alot of cars don't have airbags, and other you can disale them, like my friends s-10 you turn the key to disable them. i don't think their illegal.

i dont think i can really answer your question, because i dont really know the answer. but, i heard from someone that they are illegal. i just wanted to say that i read in one of the car mags that some company came out with an aftermarket steering wheel with an airbag. this was 2 years ago (when i read it). so i dont know if they came out with it or not.

Depends on what state you live in.... but most of them have laws requireing airbags to be present and active on cars that came with them, unless you've goten a waver from the Government (you ushually have to prove that the air bag is a safty problem for you).

why would you want to have a car without an airbag? as for the turn off switch, that is for trucks and cars where children are big enough to ride in the front seat, but not tall/big enough for the airbag. it is safer to turn it off then have it hit an 8 yr old and kill em by the force of it...

i believe if your vehicle was originally eqipped with airbags, then its required to have them on (not sure its a law or not, IF it is, then it could vary by states). living in california, i doubt u could get away if its a law.

my source is that if you take a look at your vehicle sticker tag, description, and even insurance coverage, it will state wheather your car was/is equipped with airbags or not.

The turth

Here is the real deal. If you car came equipped with an airbag it is not illegal to remove it, however you are no longer allowed to drive the car on the streets anymore (go figure). The loophole is if your car came equipped with airbags and you got in an accident where they deployed you don’t have to have them replaced.

The downside of having a steering wheel with no airbag is if you do get in a accident with a non airbag equipped steering wheel, chances are you’ll eat the steering wheel. Upside if someone steels your car they can only drive in a straight line which should make finding your car easier (seriously).

My suggestion sell the airbag steering wheel, and use the money for a 4pt harness. This will help keep you save if anything goes wrong.

^ I don't have to have them replaced? ... so basically I can replace it with a non-air bag steering wheel, correct?

Hummmm, guess you never had a wreck using a 4pt harness! After the crash you climb out, wave, and generally feel ok! The next morning you wake up Yor ***** hurt, your shoulders-arms and chest are black and blue, and you don't want to move. Even your *** is hurten from trying to go down in the seat. And it takes days to go away. If you ever had someone beat the crap outa you, figure twice as bad. (no sh#t)

Stay with the airbag!

no, I i say that because all an airbag is is a bomb, me and my grandfather got rearended i broke my nose and 2 ribs, he broke his thumbs, and nose, basically all an airbag is is a m-80 attached to a bag

I've had a couple of accidents with a 4pt all I was able to reduce to a slow impact. In all of them I was kept in place, I opted for a momo D shaped steering wheel and lost my airbag in the process. I could imagine the pain after a high impact using the 4pt harness but it beats the stock harness with no airbag.

last few times i got pulled over, the cops didnt say anything about my steering wheel, but my car didnt come with one anyway, and those cops where in...
Cali (hollywood, and south L.A.) Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas (5 times)
or maybe it was just the fact i was wearing a four point harness,
if you got one of those an air bag would be pointless.

but if you really want to know, the laws about it should be avalible for the asking.
