Could be the exhaust piping... Honda issued TSB SB629948 which reads:

"A buzz or vibration that is only audible after driving through a water puddle can be caused by thermal-shock to the exhaust pipe "B". The cold water splashing on the hotpipe temporarily changes the shape of the pipe and allows it to hit the body. To correct this noise, replace the pipe B, exhaust H/C 6693212 PIN 18220-S5D-A12."

I get that bad when I go through some water on the road. I was told by the dealership it was my brakes. hmmm I was like wtf!!! and then other honda owners I know have said the same thing and they don't even care so I don't care either. I wouldn't worry about it.

Up here in Danbury, I go through huge water puddles all the time. I just dont give it gas for a few seconds, then when I think the sound will stop, I give a bit of gas.

I have the exact same problem. I put a greddy cat back exhaust on. The TSB is only for 2001 models. Mine is a 2002. I could not get honda to check it out under that TSB. I had my car in 3 times for this problem. Now I am well outside warranty. I have an aftermarket extended warranty, I wonder if they would cover it. If anyone Figures the problem out please post it. I have been dealing with this for 3 years now.

I thought I was hydrolocking my car or something. But I put my stock airbox back on, and its still doing it. When I hit puddles, I cant really accellerate, and it sounds like my clutch is slipping. Ive even had to pull over from not being able to drive after that happens. I am hydrolocking my engine, correct?

edit-I always let off the gas for 5-10 seconds before I accel. again.

Hydro locked is when you suck water up into the engine, or when something becomes blocked by water.

When you hit a puddle of water, the only thing you should feel is resistance from the tires having to cut through the water. Thats all. So it could be that your tires arent channeling water well.. dunno.

For the original question yes it is your exhause pipe hitting the body and causing the noise and the shaking. In fact mine does it but it only started after I got an aftermarket exhaust.

Do you think that there is a fix to the problem? Could we wrap the part of the exhaust that is hitting with high temp wrap? I don't know. I would just like a fix. If anyone has any ideas let me know please.

I couldn't tell you if it happend before I had exhaust, because it never rained when i had the stock exhaust.

Don't get it wet! haha

Just let the car sit for a few minutes and it will go away eventually. You can throw it into neutral and it should stop. I don't know if anyone actually knows where it is hitting.

everyone has this problem, u think the exhaust companys would have fixed it by now

if anyone has a solution to this problem please post, like what exactly did they do to get it fixed so i can go and to a muffler place and tell them myself what they have to do. I know if i go there right now they'll probably have no idea what im talking about, so for those who fixed the problem what did they have done. thanks

I had this problem about 3 years ago when I got my 01 honda civic. I put a greddy evo-2 exhaust on it which changed my whole stock exhaust system. That winter in cali, it rained heavily which caused my muffler b-pipe (below passanger deck) to hit the bottom of the car. My car is lowered with H&R springs. My car would make a big vibrating noise underneath whenever I drove the car for a long time in the rain or just in heavy rain.

I went to a muffler shop, took out the back piece of muffler. Leaving the b-pipe hangars connected. Told the guy to heat up the b-pipe, so I could bend it lower. In a way it helped out alot in water, but now that my b-pipe is lower, it scratches in big bumps, but hey! it stopped hitting my underneath car.

Greddy evo-2 catback exhaust is 2-piece for hond acivic unlike 3 piece for other cars.

Try bending the b-pipe so it wont hit the bottom.

The B-Pipe is the pipe that connects to the cat right? At what point did you bend the pipe? Is it very obvious where it is hitting? Thanks for all the info. Helped a lot.

Sounds like it would be easier to just replace the B pipe like Honda says...

why replace the b-pipe back to stock? you get no gains when you dont change the b-pipe. If you change the exhaust back to stock b-pipe and use the axel-back part of the muffler, all you get is sound.

The reason why this is happening because the aftermarket exhaust has a bigger hole.
If you cant bend it then just change everything back to stock because its useless using an axel-back muffler. It doesnt change anything but the sound. Muffler shops can easily do this for 20$ or so.

Stick a long metal piece from the back side, melt underneath the passanger side because thats where its hitting. Dont melt too much because you will break the muffler. Just until it gets red. Stik the metal pipe, and bend it downwards.

This is for the greddy evo-2 exhaust system. Its 2 piece and you would have to take out the back part of muffler so the front part has nothing connected to it except the cat at front (which you can leave alone).

Good Luck!!!

THanks a lot Civic RedLine. My car has been basically undriveable the last 2 days. I live in AZ, and we NEVER get rain, and when it does, just sits on top of the road. We flood in like 10 minutes of heavy rain. Hasnt stopped in like 2 days, heavy as hell rain. I dont think we have had anything like this is about 4 years.

Back to the point, my car was doing it so bad yesterday, I would have to stop for like 5 minutes, than today on the freeway, I had to pull over again. Does it sound like a slipping clutch sort of. It gets really loud and shakes. Exactly what your saying, but just want to make sure it isnt the transmission. Can a clutch slip in rain due to the water?

whats the big dillio. Look at your car man. its 01 and its already breaking down. Thats so sad.
Dude the sound is normal if you have an aftermarket exhaust. Theres no way to avoid the sound. Its not like its going to break y our car or anything, the b-pipe is just hitting the bottom of your car. Mine still does it also, but only when I go into big puddles.

YOUR CLUTCH IS NOT SLIPPING

I was not sure what it was. It is definately not breaking down. I have 90,000 miles and my car seems to run better than most people w/40-50,000 miles. It just sounds like its slipping, and I was trying to make sure nothing is wrong. You dont have to be a d***, a**! I pulled over because the noise sounded terrible, not because it broke down. When it sounds like that, there is no way I would step on the gas until it is back to normal. You may, but I wont have something banging into my car like that. My car will last. I have the same clutch after 90,000 miles, so Im trying to get some insight as to what exactly it is. I am not worried anymore, thank you.

You helped a lot, but dont need to be a d***!
