My 02 LX vs 02+ SI vs Supra
Let me start by saying I never usually street race, but this was the 1st time I had run into a tuned supra out looking for some fun. It was a rare opportunity to run against one, and being I knew the location and the time of day it was, I decided to take the chance. Onto the story..
Coming home from a friends house after watching Napoleon Dynomite which came out on DVD yesterday, I had pulled off the freeway onto a 3 lane road towards my house. I was moving a bit quicker then I normally do as the air was cool, and my 117hp econobox was feeling a bit more frisky. Past a few lights I noticed the familiar outlined red circles from a set of tail lights that I'm sure people see all too often when attempting to overtake a car of such tremendous power.
I quickened my pace to confirm if my suspicions were true only to have my attempts thwarted by occasional blips of his right foot. I knew this was no ordinary machine, and my heart raced just everytime I caught a earfull of the familiar inline-6 howl. Now this whole time I had been focused on this mystery machine, which by now was undeniably the highway destroying supra. However, I had failed to notice the other car trying to pace along side him as well, and like myself, was failing miserably. A very clean looking 02+ SI had been sucked in by the aura of a screaming BOV and the curves of a very wide, but very sexy rear end.
Managing to catch up to the SI, the passenger and I exchanged glances of awe at the Supra that had now taken notice of a second set of headlights trying to keep pace. Seeing two cars lining up trying to match his speed only enticed his turbo(s) to spool and put some more distance between the ecoboxes and himself. This whole time, the SI and myself had been feeling each other during our attempts to gain ground on the Supra. Neither able to pull away or fall behind when a downshift was needed.
Another mile or so of dogs sniffing each others asses to size each other up continued until the the familiar yellow glow of a stoplight lit the black street ahead. The big dog picked his lane and the runts of the littler quickly shuffled to get into position along side him. Myself in the far right lane, SI down the middle, with the Supra growling in the far left lane. I began to tense as I knew what was about to go down. I looked to my left at the passenger in the SI, gave him a "This is going to hurt my ***" look and slipped it into 1st. A few moments passed with nobody doing anything, 3 sets of exhaust mildly humming in cool air.
The K20 next to me soon came to life with a few pulses of an anxious right foot, only to be silenced by a shreak of a BOV to the left of him. I knew I was never going to have this chance again, so with the clutch to the floor I gave them a taste of my 4 cylinders of fury. A symphony of exhaust gas and sucking air bellowed through the night as all cars eagerly awaited the opposing light to shift to yellow. A few cars were now behind us, quite certain of what was about to happen, only helping to illuminate the look of joy on the passenger face to my left.
Once again, the street shifted from an ominous black to a yellow haze, soon followed by the drone of 3 cars trying to hold RPM's. Carefully trying to keep my tach needled centered over "4", I slowly let out my left foot to the point of near engagement as I locked my eyes on the lights above. Green! Right foot down, left foot working my "Traction Control System". Perfect launch, no wheelspin or tire hop, solid traction as I made my way through the very quick, but very unrewarding 1st gear. Two sets of tires screamed to the left of me as both of the more powerful cars fought for traction. Having been focused traction issues of my own, I hadnt noticed that I had taken the lead.
Near the top of 1st gear, almost a full car length seprated the SI from myself, while the Supra was 1/2 car back. I relished this moment, as I knew it wouldnt last long. Shift to 2nd, and Im still managing to get away from the SI ever so slightly, and the Supra's nose dipping violently and racing skyward under the surge of power once again. The shrill but beautiful sound of his BOV signaled the end of my lead on him, as the RWD monster was finally able to get a decent hookup on the street. Instantly pulling 2-3 cars on me as I climbed my way to the top of second gear, I saw those gorgeous lights that had sparked my interest at the start of this 3 lane road.
After putting a honest 2 buslengths on the two lesser machines by the time I approached the top of 2nd, I lost all focus on the car that had destroyed me so effortlessly. My attention was now on the howl of a K20 seeking to not be embarassed by a lowly D17. Into 3rd I managed to keep a 1 car lead on him, but knowing my "power" would be running out very shortly, I held on for life, my right foot buried against the floor. Slowly but smoothly, I began to see his set of lights creeping up on me in my sideview mirror. My tach was now approaching the red, and Im sure he was only halfway there soon to hit Vtec. Quick shift to 4th and all is lost. He has just hit his powerband in 3rd, and my 1.7 liters are all tapped out. He quickly regains everything I have taken from him much to my dismay, but I knew it was going to happen sooner or later.
Nearing a shopping center, I gave up my futile attempt to hold him off any longer and eased on the brakes. Slowing down to legal speeds we again paced each other having caught up to the Supra that had stopped wasting his gas on us a long time ago. We caught another redlight, but with cars in front of us, nowhere to go. The supra was now in the middle lane with the SI stacked behind him. Rolling down my window I gave the Supra own a big thumbs up
, and complimented him on his machine. I had already passed my turn off, so approaching the next light I put on my right blinker and slowed down. The SI was overtaking me once again, but this time I stuck my hand out with another thumbs up, to have it returned by the passenger. I made my right turn, followed by a quicky "U-ey" and proceeded on home with a giant smile plastered on my face.
I dont think its ever felt that good to be raped so hard.

WHILE ON MY BIKE!!!! A 2004 Suzuki GSX-R600. His car was also extremely modified. Running probably the biggest turbo I have ever seen. A T88H. His car ran 10 flat in the quarter this past summer on a conservative tune!

theres no comparison against a supra...that thing from a moving start, all he has to do is downshift and that huge *** turbo spools...and its over...its pathetic how our cars are put up against those supras...

Rep Power: 0 In all honesty, I have no idea if it was a monster supra or not. Hell, it could have been "only" pushing 500hp and that was more then enough to decimate me. It sounded mean and sure moved like it. But when its already put 8-10 cars on me by the time I hit 60, its hard to judge how much power it has, just WAY more then me.
