Question About Installing Oil Pan???

Well I am installing a new oil pan this weekend cause my other one is leaking and have a few questions.

First off, when reading from the service manaul, it says to apply liquid gasket to the oil pan mating surface. Now do they mean apply it to the actual oil pan or on the engine block where the oil pan bolts up too?

Also they say apply a 4mm bead around the surface and then apply a second one where the first one ends, so does that mean they want me to add another 4mm bead next to it or on top of the first bead.

And the last thing it says to apply the liquid gasket on the mating surface and in the bolt hole threads. So I need to cover the bolt holes with gasket, then drive the bolts in through the gasket into the holes?

I am just curious about all this because I have never done it before and dont want to pay to have it done. Just let me know.

Go to Honda and buy HONDABOND. Works best. They mean to overlap the Hondabond so that you have a solid seal. Put some hondabond inside the bolt holes to keep it sealed.

You do this while the bond is still wet, so it only has to be applied on one side. Clean both surfaces as best as possible.

^ yep... just overlap everything.. no need for 2 seals.. and put some in the holes so it seals along the threads.. you can also put some on the bolts but you dont really need to.. but this will also make another seal where the head of the bolt hits the pan..

Clean the mating surfaces with a little brake cleaner or similar low residue solvent to help the seal. Also wipe up the excess when you get done. No need to have all that extra crap hanging out there. Finally, use a torque wrench on any engine fastener. Nothing sucks worse than busting bolts inside your block...

so I am putting the liguid gasket on the oil pan or the engine block? Cause I just looked at the manual and it says to apply it to the oil pan mating surface of the block, so I am a bit confused. Also the bolts only call for 8.7 Ft. lbs, so I am assuming I dont need a torque wrench for this. I have yet to see a torque wrench that has 8.7 ft. lbs. Any other help would be appreciated.

just go to the autoparts store and buy the high temp(black) gasket maker. It's made for oil pans and other stuff. then just run a 1/4" bead around the oil pan and make loops around the bolt holes. when you put the pan to the block, the gasket maker will spread out into the bolt holes. the hardest part was getting all the old hondabond crap off. and you have to pry on the bitch pretty good to get the seal to break too. I did mine a couple weeks ago. I bought another pan and had the oil return(for turbo) and oil temp. fittings threaded in and then welded on. It's not too hard though, just a pain to get that old gasket crap off. PM me if you have any problems or questions.

8.7ft-lbs is equal to 104.4inch-lbs. You can easily find torque wrenches calibrated in inch-lbs. 12 inches to a foot... 8.7ft.lbs x 12inch/ft=104.4inch.lbs You see units cancel, and you get the correct units.

if you have an aluminum oil pan (EX), honda recommends this stuff called Ultra Flange II (nickname cheese wiz).. this stuff is amazing, the same OEM gasket they use at the factory.

btw, anyone looking for an oil pan, I still have one for sale, $40 shipped with my can of leftover Ultra Flange II (enough to complete an install)
