First Snow Drifting
Ok Ok i know the 7th gen sedan isn't the best car for drifting, but i do have a few suspension mods and what not. but any ways its the first snow here in st.louis today. and me and a bunch of buddies(all back from college for thanksgiving) have been doing drifting on the fist snow for the past 3 years basically since we all got our licences. but usually it was all of us in GM f-bodies or a mustang. I had a 87 GTA with a few mods difenatly no grocery getter. but this year is gonna be diffrent considering i have a front wheel drive 4 banger. im putting my stock rims and tires on cause i don't want to destroy my R-rated tires just playing around.]
So any tips on drifting in a front wheel drive car??????????
Here is what im gonna be going against
1994 6-speed Formula
1993 5-speed 5.0 mustang
1997 auto Grand AM(last year 1992 auto Camaro RS 305)
1990 auto Trans AM(Newbee)

There's a vid of a 7th gen drifting somewhere on the forum. I h=ave the video downloaded on my home comp but I'm at school for a couple more hours. I can send it to you if you can't find the link by then. e-mail me winnerpl@nyc.rr.com if you want me to send it.
Yeah just use the brake a lot and have the gear so its in high rpms so it can get you straight again its gonna take some technique i have also tried it in rain its a lot harded than rear wheel drive but it can be done. Just watch fast and the furious i bet paul walker can give you some tips hahahaha

Heres the most important tip i can give you............Dont Over stear.....its like this. ....right befor you hit the apex of the turn pull the ebrake. and stear the way you wana go..when you feel your back end start slideing turn the wheel the direction your going ( Strait infront of you) when going into the skid you want the car to make a L turn its hard to explain so i'll post a pic.
Good Luck

Lol thats not a drift. I owned an 86 GT-S and a 92 240sx. and used to drift down with some freinds. I also like to "pull my e-brake" on the civic too. The only way to put it is that FF cars just don't drift. I have only seen one vid. of a 91 hatch pulling off consecutive drifts and even then the angle that you can get the car pitched is not that great due to the weight distribution of the FF cars. If you ever get a chance to try it on a FR car then you'll know that FF's don;t drift. I go every year to irwindale to see D1, now thats some serious drift

Is that a shift light on the steering colum? why was it on almost all the time?

i wouldnt recommend performing the drift the way it was depicted....well not a true drift where you're carry enough momentum...FR cars dont lock their rear wears before the turn....
as you're approaching the turn do and aggressive out turn, on the turn in tap the brake to pitch the center of gravity off the rear wheels, this will start the inertia drift, you should then experience understeer as you begin making your turn....then pull the ebrake to lock your rear wheels, pull enough to get the oversteer you are comforable with and drop the ebrake back down....as soon as the rear end kicks out countersteer where you want the car to go....make sure your revs are high so you can power out of the turn...this will be more difficult with snow....gas and you should feel more traction as you straighten out and throttle through your drift.....

Re: First Snow Drifting
Have the car in 2nd at about 4-5k then turn the wheel in the direction your going shank the e-brake keeping the wheel still in that direction and when the back end slides out let off the gas, stear in the opposite direction and nail it again and you'll straighten it out. I think this is right, writing it is different than doing it. Ha, I can drift just great but writing it down might not be my strong side. Best of luck and be safe! Let us know how it goes.

i would only edit that middle civic....the one right after pulling the ebrake....
with the wheels turned that way at that point, you'll be spinning and sliding off the road already

Re: First Snow Drifting
wutever powersliding in the snow its all pretty fun stuff. Funniest thing ive ever seen is my friend with a 98 hyundai accent 5spd slidin thru a parking lot it was awesome. That thing has some ***** in the high rpms hahahaha and it loves to spin around those corners. Everytime i try anything in the vic i never go fast enough and get scared and let off the gas too much and end up just doin like a 180 and stoppin instead of goin around the corner.

Re: First Snow Drifting
When you're drifting, you should be going into the corner sideways, not just dragging your *** through the corner. A drift is supposed to be the fastest way out of the apex of a curve because you're already looking in the direction you'll want to go after the corner, get it? Fishtailing around it is fun but useless really. FWD cars are horrible for drifting, it's been said that a true drift cannot be done in FWD, they call it powersliding or fishtailing.
Hit up an empty parking lot, make sure there are no islands you'll hit. Start by going at a reasonable speed, say 40km/h, steer and pull the hand brake. Ride this out a few times until you get the feel of the car. Once you get this down, do the same, but instead of having the back end swing out completely, hold the drift you're so sliding straight, while going diagonaly, this is done with a combination of acceleration, steering and braking. You should eventualy developpe a natural feel for the car. This is the best you'll get with fwd unfortunately.
Watch out for snow banks, accidents happend, you have little to no control at certain points of the drift, make sure your scout out the area you'll be drifting in before you head out.
On another note, front wheel skids are easily corrected by pulling the hand brake. Go into an empty parking lot, initiate a front wheel skid by giving to much gas for a sharp turn, the car will begin sliding, pull the hand brake to send the back end out, correcting the skid. There are other ways to do this, this makes you feel badass, though.
Another fun thing to do in an empty parking lot is crank the wheel, put the car in reverse and floor it, you spin around, it's neat.

Re: First Snow Drifting
what is an r-rated tire? never heard of that, is that like, kids under 18 cant see them without a parent? just kidding, its not really drifting if ur front wheel drive, its just sliding, but still fun
Re: First Snow Drifting
I live in Ottawa, lots of snow up here. All we do is take our Civics/Neons/Golfs out sliding, we mastered that snow ****.
