Buliding an ex, need help!
I'm stuck in Iraq, racking up the $ and I have a 2001 civic dx at home! MY father bought me an 03 ex engine, since I blew mine up a few months back! Now before I put the engine in my car I want to build it! I have a set of DC Sports 4 into 1 headers on the way, and a long list of other parts I want, I need help finding some of these parts! Also, I'm new to the import tuning world, so I may need asstance in modifying my plan! So heres what I wanted to do........ AEM cai, or V2 can't decide! apexi vtec controller, AEM pulley kit, AEM Cam gears, exaust(brand or style????) Dh-rachin.com 10:8:1 oversized pistons and rods, dh-racing.com throttle body, throttle body spacer, dh-racing.com valve springs, titanium retainers, and oversized valves! I also need to know what kinda machine work will need to be done, keep in mind I will be running a NX system 50-75 shot! any help you can provide will be helpful! I plan on spending $5,000 or less if that helps!
Power over stock? Or, power over DX?
Lets see(assume power over DX):
EX engine: +12HP
Nitrous: +50HP
DC Header: +3HP
DC exhaust:+3HP
AEM Intake:+4HP
Internals: +7HP
TB: +2HP
Cam gear: +2HP (varies on where you want your powerband)
AEM pulleys: +2HP
Total: 83HP over your stock DX engine(just an estimate). What about fuel tuning? Better ignition? Block guard?
I would recommend a block guard, better plugs and coils, and a lighter flywheel with a better clutch.

ok stop thinkin all motor for right now. second erase dh racing.com from any memory that u have. their **** is junk and will 100% screw ur new motor up. third if u want any power get a turbo. 5g prolly wont get ur motor built and turboed, unless u do all the installs urself. and with a built motor and turbo the possibilities are endless on the amount of whp u can have. i hit 245

If I were in your position, I would get a K-Series swap instead. It is more expensive but it will give you the best gains.
Basic bolt ons for the D17 do not produce as much power as you may think. For example if you were to search this site for opinions on intakes you will find that 90% of aftermarket intakes reduce power rather than increase it.
However if you are dead set in building a D17 motor you should consider a Port and Polish, chipped ECU, Vafc tunning. Even with those mods, you still are not going to produce alot of power.
You can also go the forced induction route, a SF turbo kit might be for sale in the classsifieds section you can get some decent gains from that kit, reliability does go down with turbo though.

K20 is a perfect idea, PNP is good for the d17, chipped ECU for the d17 doesnt really exist at this time but maybe eventually. vafc is ok but there is better for the same price almost. vafc does not allow for the indepth tuning as other units offer. turbo does take the reliability of the car down, but the power goes up drastically
