Steering Wheel Mounted Radio Controls
What I did once, if your HU came equipped with a remote control, do this. Go out and buy steering wheel controls. If you take apart your remote, solder in the right value of resistors so you can hook it up to a 12v source.. relocate the eye of the remote by the HU so the signal can get from the eye to the HU, and connect the controls to the approriate control on the remote. It was a PITA, but the results were worth it.

If you're looking at replacing your HU, some of them come with steering wheel mounted remotes. Personally, I wouldn't waste the money on a stock HU to do it.
