side air bags, can they work on a car w/o having them originally

i have a 2001 civic lx sedan, no side air bags stock...

but i have RSX-R seats w/ the side airbag....

theirs connectors under seat for the air bags...

i know in the dash theirs the SRS unit.. and the wires that go to/fro seatbelt and airbag.. can i buy the wireharness off a civic that had side airbags(or from honda) and then be able to connect my side airbags.....reset my SRS and then have working side airbags.?

no they won't work. You have no sensors in the doors to detect a side impact which would trigger the side airbags to deploy.

If you tapped the side airbags to the front airbags... the sides will deploy in a front end collision. You don't want that happening...

I think it'll be to much of a mission to install the sensors. I think you should just install the seats and tie strap the wires connectors for the srs under the seat somehow so it's not in the way. I've thought about doing that but I thought about it and researched on it and it's to much of a headache. If you go ahead with it, good luck and I hope it turns out fine.

Yeah I wouldnt mess with it. I have the side air bags and according to the manual they are smart bags, which means they take into consideration more then just an impact to deploy. There are factors inolved to get them to work correctly, such as weight distribution. I can get my srs light to go on just by shifting my weight around. I dont know what aspects of this system the car has built into it seeing as how it was manufactured without side airbags to begin with. Also with differant seats they are going to be weighted differantly and the forces wont be the same as stock seats, so even if the smart bag system was in place it might be thrown off due to the seat just plain being differant, and what if the seats you are installing do not have this smart system. Also what if upon install when your wiring the seat you accidently create a short and the bag gets deployed I wouldnt want my body out of intended position when it goes off as serious injury can occur. So yeah your intentions may be good, but I bet there are more factors involved then you might think about. All I am saying is just think about things very carefully your messing with something very complex thats designed to save your life. It's not something I'd fool around with.
