Hey, I'm looking for some new speakers. Here are my requirements:
1. They have to sound good over the entire audio spectrum. No bass-only hip hop speakers. Of course I want good bass, but it's not all I want.
2. I want replacement speakers for stock. No amps, no subs.
3. Preferrably under $300 total.
Ok that's it.
Do I have to get the same size speakers to get them to fit or what?
I don't know anything about speakers at all, but I'm very picky about how my stuff sounds. Funny that I haven't taken the time to learn about it yet, huh?
Ok, thanks.
edit - I'll read the FAQ later tonight. I just wanted to get this question out. And I'm sure it's been asked a lot but I didn't feel like searching

I would go with the same size 6.5 all around. That's the first upgrade I did with audio. Got some infinity reference 652I and they sound way better than the paper ones, even with the stock deck.

Get 2 component sets if you have the tweeters in the sail panels, otherwise go for 2 sets of coaxials
I recommend Phoenix Gold (Octane-ZR for components, Octane-R for coaxials), or Alpine Type-S

A single sub makes a huge difference in completing a system. Speakers won't give much bass, and it's not good for them to play lower notes anyway. If you do get involved in audio stuff, DIY is a must. I started out paying tons of $$ for installs until I just learned how to do it.
If you are that picky, you really should consider an amp. Actually, you should consider subs, too, but that drives up the price a lot more.
For $300, you can get some good components for the front and a good amp, and probably even fit in the wiring cost as well. Provided you are willing to spend some time installing it yourself (and be prepared to spend a weekend doing it, since you have never done an install before).
(I'm not sure if you are planning on new speakers in the rear, but I would recommend getting an amp over getting rear speakers... Run a search on rear speakers and see what people have to say if you are interested -- there have been several threads now where people talk about the value (or lack of) of rear speakers.)
Hope this helps...

My old Corsica had awesome speakers stock. They had sick bass. I don't know what size they were, but I just want something like that. I don't want to lose any trunk space from subs or amps.
Our stock speakers suck, and I assume a decent set of speakers would be a substantial upgrade.

Yeah, I know what he said. I was telling him he might want to reconsider, given how picky he said he was...
Anyway, if you are set on not getting an amp, there are still plenty of speakers out there that will sound good powered by a HU. Do you have an aftermarket HU, or are you planning on running off the stock HU? You'll probably find that if you are running off the HU power, upgrading the HU will make a significant difference.
Some brands you should look at would be:
JL Audio
Alpine
Infinity
Someone else can suggest more...

Most aftermarket speakers will have much less bass than stock ones if they are unamped. Our stock speakers are actually pretty decent for bass response.
Honestly, i'm going to echo others here, and say to get a component set and an amp. It's just not worth it to upgrade speakers with no amp, you'll probably be disappointed in the end if your as picky as you say you are.

ditto for me.
And as far as losing space. I feel you on that. I am still fighting a sub in my car. I got all new speakers and mounted my amp under my drivers seat. Even when the seat is all the way up, it isn't in the way.
You can't even see it unless I let someone sit behind me which is about never. And even when someone is behind me, my seat blocks the amp. It's not visible at all and I figure it's just wasted space.
I just wish I had a way to put a sub somewhere to finish off the "full sound spectrum" without filling up my trunk with a box.
I also don't want to lose my spare tire. Some people mount where the spare is, but with my luck I'll blow a tire and be out in no mans land. I don't want to risk it.
But getting back to you. I would say get a good set of fronts, and get an amp. You have a lot more control over sound with it.
