Hondata may have just helped us out without knowing it....
Check this out:
http://www.hondata.com/kprorelease.html
Its an ECU for a K20 - but here's the kicker, its the stock ECU modified so it can be PROGRAMMABLE! Why is that cool you ask? Well, look at the specifications - you can change a multitude of parameters, including FUEL MAPS! The actual plugs on the K20 ECU is identical I believe to the D17s, other swap members may want to chime in here....The only thing that would be required is a few wiring harness modifications possibly, and a few sensor swaps from the K20! This may actually work, and is CHEAP enough to boot!! Wish I had more money and time to try this out!!!

It would require some work - sort of like the vafc hack on the hondatech boards....I think it has potential of working. Alot of the sensors on the newer hondas are similar....Plus with the kpro you can disable a lot of the crap that might be incompatible (such as the multiplex unit, immobilizer, etc!) - costs a butt load less than an EMS or Motec....yet retains a lot of the stock stuff that the honda needs to function like stock.....
I would really like to hack with one of these....

i'd get one if i planned on boosting, but i don't so..
I really don't think a k20 ecu will work with a d17, i mean a k20 worked with a d17 ecu but it WAS NOT happy.

i mean if you feel like blowing 1600 bucks and finding out be my guest....but i wouldn't recommend it.

I see potential in this, compared to waiting for the EMS, etc. When the D17 starts to get built up (as in the case with DH shortblocks) - other methods of fuel control are going to be needed.....This MAY be an alternative. Sensors can be faked or wired together. If you look at the specs it says you can adjust the cam sensors as well....
Granted, as stated above it may be pricey, but you might be able to find a cheap K20 ECU in a junkyard somewhere...still cheaper than EMS and Motec....which don't offer a lot of the functionality of the stock features that interface with our ECU's...
