Deadly accident involving train and 7th gen sedan

WATTS, Calif. -- A commuter train struck a car sitting on the railroad tracks Monday, killing one person and injuring at least 14 others, authorities said.

The accident occurred about 8 a.m. when a Metro Blue Line train hit a vehicle on the tracks in Watts, said fire department spokesman Jim Wells. The car was dragged dozens of feet, trapping three people in the car, Wells said. Rescue crews cut the top off the car to get them out.

One person in the car was killed and two others injured, one critically. Their identities were not immediately available. At least a dozen people on the train suffered minor injuries, Wells said.

NBC4 reported that a family was traveling in the car. The mother, aged 40, was killed and her 9-year-old son was one of the injured.

The accident is under investigation and authorities are trying to determine why the car was on the tracks.

According to Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Rex Vilaubi, the signals at the track crossing were functioning properly at the time of the crash.

I captured screen shots from my tv tuner card, but they got deleted by accident. Sad story.

ouch... even though the civic has good safety ratings, pretty much nothing can win against a train...

It wasn't much w/ the structural integrity of the car... you can't do much about the force/impulse of the impact slamming a person's internals against their ribcage resulting in massive hemmoraging.
