exhaust pipe hits sway bar! HELP!

alright, i have a magnaflow exhaust on my 02 civic lx. apparently the sway bar, when turning hits it, and rattles (just sounds bad) but isn't causing any noticably difference. What can i do to stop the rattle? a friend told me to buy some exhaust wrap but i am not sure if that will solve the problem or not. any ideas i would appreciate.

Thanks,
Nate

You can either try exhaust wrap or just get it fixed from local muffler shop. They should be able to fix it easily.

mine did the same thing only when i made left turns. it was an annoying creeking noise. i originally thought it was the suspension, but when it took it to honda they showed me where the sway bar and exhaust were hitting. right now i have a piece of rubber tubing zip tied around the sway bar that helps alot. just put it on the bar where you notice it hitting the exhaust. i dont know how exhaust wrap would work though, because that is pretty thin and i dont think it would damper the noise very much.

yeah i thought the same thing about the exhaust wrap. i took the car to honda and the told me the struts were leaking so they replaced them free, then told me it was the exhaust. Waste of one week with out a car. i am going to try the rubber idea i think, and see how that works.

all you gotta do is buy a crappy bike tire for wal mart, cut it, zip tie it around the bar.. and voila...

I have the progress tuning sway bar, the old one, and the magnaflow cat back for our civic. It just barely clears - I adjusted it a little bit to clear. BUT - I wonder how the new progress turning sway bar would fit, since it is supposed to be made to accommodate the EX model civic, which has a cat installed there.

My problem is the damn downpipe rattling against the X-Brace (which causes a lot of vibration in the car - so rubber will fix nothing). I need to have a custom down pipe made up i think.....

i wish i had none about this before i got my magnaflow, since its hitting the sway bar, then im guessing a custom pipe needs to be made, but what if we want a bigger rear sway bar? would it not fit? also im having a shop install it for me , so will they be able to see the problem in fix it or do i have to ask for it?

I had the same problem with my exhaust. It made an annoying rattling sound when I made right hand turns. I had an exhaust shop heat up the exhaust hangers and adjust them to make way for more clearance. I am also running 2.5" piping.

i mean, bigger doesn't mean faster cuz then you're losing so much back pressure.

^^ the only engine that needs back pressure to work right is a 2 stroke engine, last time I looked ours was 4 stroke....... however you are right there is such a thing as too big, but it doesnt have any thing to do with Back pressure, it deals with heat. you dont want the exaust to cool off as it goes through the pipe, reason being is that cooler gasses are more dense, and thus heavier. so if you get a pipe thats too big (allowing the exaust to cool) the engine will have to work harder to expell the gasses out of said pipe causing a loss of power.

the best exaust is straight pipe.

you shouldnt have any bigger than a 2.25 in. pipe on our 4 cylinders unless of course your car is Turbo'd, then thats a diff. story!!!
