Question Philly People: HELP!

Yo guys in Philly:

I am thinking about transfering schools next year. Right now I am a commuter on Long Island at Adelphi University. I hate driving every day over an hour in traffic to get there. I have NO "college experiance" at all. All my friends went away and I have been left in the dust.

I really want to go to school in a big city. My top choice is Temple University. I should have NO PROBLEM getting into that school. What I want to know is if it is "the ghetto". I've been to Philly before and it always seemed very nice and historically themed. By next Aug I should have enough money to move into an appartment and furnish it. I would declare residency in PA to get a price break from the school for in-state residents.

My questions:

Is Philly a fun city to go to college in?
Are there nice appartments there or is it all in the projects? What is rent a month like?
Am I better off living on campus?
Do I need to carry a gun when I walk the streets at night? Will I get robbed regularly?

Any help would be great. I have about a year to figure out what I am doing and to make the trasition alot easier if I plan on declaring residency in PA. Thanks guys.

I would say move to philly but dont live by temple. Temple isnt in the best of neighborhoods. you could get an apartment in Philly. The costs are 500+ for a decent apt in philly. If I were you Id move to the northeast secton, not saying theyre arent a lot of nice other sections I just know NE is good. Also Roxborough is good. lol i wouldnt hang out at temple late at night, i heard its kinda bad down there, but in NE/Rox u can walk around.

Yeah, move back to pennsylvania man! and go to Lehigh Uni, it's mad popular. In my senior year, I always saw lehigh sweats/tees worn by students. I never saw and NJIT shirts... but I went anyway. It sucks because NJIT is also in "the ghetto". Kind of like the oasis in a desert.

Thanks Debbz that was really helpful. I am still debating whether I should live on campus or off. I'll be 20 next year and I think it's time I have my own space. My car was paid off the day I go it, so there's no other real expenses except an appartment. I haven't been to Philly in a while but I have a few friends that go to Villanova and the love it there.

Debbz: In the NE/Roxborough would I need my car to get to school? I am very familiar with NYC and parking there is a nightmare. Is Philly like that too? How far is the NE section / Roxbough to the Temple campus? 500+ is not bad at all. My buddy in NYC pays $2200 a month and splits it with a friend of his. That sounds like alot of money, but it's acutally cheaper than living on campus.

Thanks for the link Mex. I checked it out and it seems really cool. Just wondering how you heard about them since you don't live in Philly? It seems like a huge condos. It's VERY upscale. I'm looking to spend around $600-850 a month max. I still have not checked out the dorms at Temple yet, but usually its a TON of money to live in a dorm. I estimate around $1500 a month. But you get to leave during intersessions and be guarenteed back for the next semester where as you must pay to keep an appartment, even if you are not there during the summers.

You could either use your car or public transportation.

I am very familiar with NYC and parking there is a nightmare. Is Philly like that too?
In center city I would say yeah it can be a pain, but I'm sure temple has student parking. In the NE/Rox section I would say no problem. Cant gaurentee it tho.

How far is the NE section / Roxbough to the Temple campus?
I cannot be totally certain since I don't go there regularly, but I would say 1/2hr not in rush hour. Maybe a hour+ in rush hour.

Also, What type of Apt were u looking for? www.apartmentguide.com is a great source!! If you'd like my AIM is smirnoff h0e. if u see an apartment u like IM me the link and ill give u info on the area. My email is debbz@comcast.net (i dont check that often tho). So hit me up if u have any questions . I just recently got my own apartment and I know how important info on the area would be. I would reccomend making appointments with all the places u would consider moving too and visit each one before making a decision. Philly isnt that far away!

me and my friends made it from Philly too LI in about 45mins once. heh
