Try a lens cleaner...... they DO get dirty.
If a lens cleaning disc won't do it, the best way to clean the pickup is to open the HU up, and clean the lens GENTLY with a Q-tip dipped in alcohol.

Time for a new headunit! But really, my new HU sometimes gets weird too. I live in a humid place now, and whenever I eject a CD it looks like someone dropped it in water and let it dry. Sometimes you'll actually get that condensation on the cd player lens. If it's cold or humid, let the hu "warm up" first and then try it.

That's retarded. I had my stock unit in for almost six months and it always read the burnt cds--even the cheapest generic brands. If it didn't read CD-Rs, it means the unit is manufactured to the older standard and should only be worth $5-10. They don't really exist anymore. Maybe find another dealer closeby and tell them it doesn't play cds at all. Then give them your burnt cds to test it with (they'll have nothing else to try).

Two possible causes (other than dirty lens):
1. Cheap cd-r's. My Kenwood Mp3 player HU simply does not like certain brand cd-r's.
Fix:Try another brand.
2. Burning them at high speeds. Some cd players can't play cd-r's burnt at super high speeds (52x), especially cd-rw's.
Fix: Try burning at slower speeds.
