hey fellas.
I want to buy some paint to cover my altezza grille and the door handles etc. If I go to Home Depot (just an example) and give them my car's paint code (rallye red), can they make paint just from that? I was thinking maybe giving them a picture of the car or find a place to chip off some paint and give it to them.
I'm going to go to a shop to have them pieces painted, but it will save them time if they already had the paint. And the last time I was there for repairs, they didn't match the colors as well as they did the first time. But they're the only shop I trust.
Should I just go to a paint store or can home depot help me out?
thanks please gimme some input.

Home Depot only carries the names of colors that are from the major paint manufacturers for homes. You would have to use a sample that they can match (minimum a size of a quarter). Being that I worked there for 4 years during college, I would guess that it would be too hard to match the sheen and color from a car. My recommendation is that you have a car paint shop do it.

yeah I was thinking that too. but if it gets clearcoated and layered the right amount of times, it wouldn't matter (i think)
I'll probably just end up going to Maaco and have them paint my stuff.
The main reason why I wanted to buy paint myself, is because I can't leave my car in the shop. I need it for school. If I gave them the matched paint, then all they would have to do is paint the pieces.

What about those cans of factory color spray paint they sell at like Meijer? I've never tried them, but I've seen them.

bboy, don't diy a bumper. That's something for professionals. Do smaller pieces that are not as likely to get hit but a pebble and start chipping off (the paint).

And you're right, don't DIY Bumper. You actually need hardener and other compound stuff to professionally paint big things. It's not just spray painting.
I sure wish my car was newer

There's something they put in the paint for professional jobs that lets the paint flex. Home Depot paint will not have that. You're not gonna save a lot of time by getting the paint for them, and I don't think it'd be worth it.

Actually - check out http://www.paintscratch.com
They use the COMPLETE paint code from your car - not just the first 5 digits or something - there is also a plant code, which is where your vehicle was painted or something. Its different on all cars. They match the plant code, for a complete paint match. Its a little more expensive (a 12 oz can of silver + 12 oz of clear coat cost me about $50 shipped), but its still cheaper than having a body shop paint it for me (the front grill that is)....
On a side note, I DID buy a can of paint from home depot - there is something called krylon plastic primer, specifically designed as a base coat to promote adheasion of the paint to the plastic. So far it looks pretty good!
