5 Speed Remote Start Safety
Having to unfortunately suffer the misfortune that was my father leaving my car in 1st gear with the Parking brake off and remote starting my 02 EX into the rear of a jeep, I have come up with a new idea (Or maybe it is an old idea) that I think could be useful to those of us who ventured into the 5-speed remote start area. Yeah, I know I should have hooked up the E-Brake wire, but I didn't, I just figured I would never be dumb enough not to pull it when I park. My father, on the other hand, is old school; he drove cars to the brink of destruction, many of which did not have functioning E-brakes. Anyways, there is an idea somewhere in these random ramblings.
For those of you who have alarms which utilize an instantaneous negative trigger engine cutoff (Such as a hood pin which reads ground when the hood is open and will disengage the remote start feature.) I have an idea I would like to share with you.
Install a mercury switch, with one side grounded and the other tapped into the hood pin wire, into the engine bay. Now, this will take some toying around with to get the positioning right, but you can make it so that if your car starts, and jumps, the mercury will bounce and complete the negative circuit, killing the engine instantaneously (The car would believe that the hood has opened).
For those of you who do not have negative inputs, you could relay the negative trigger into a positive trigger, install a diode inline and tap it into the brake wire, which will read 12 volts when pressed and also kill the engine.
This is just a suggestion, but if somebody wants to take this idea and run with it or implement it, please do. This idea is not perfect by any means, parking at an extreme angle could make the switch read ground and not let you remote start your car, but hey, it's just an idea right?
Thoughts?
P.S. Most (if not all) Directed Electronics alarms have the instantanious engine cutoff inputs, which means the majority of you could implement this idea. I personally have a Python 880XP, the 2 way responder which is the same as the Viper and Cliffored respective models.

i just used a magnetic switch and two back-straps. one is mounted on the left side of my shift assembly and the other to the shift lever. it only works for first gear...but its not like i leave it in any other gear if i have to. infact, i never leave it in gear, ever. but just for added peace of mind. i thought about the merc. switch...but...i liked the magnetic switch better. good one
