bought HKS Type-1 turbo timer - 2nd page has pics

After looking at a bunch of products I thought the type-1 is the best way to go. I't does everything the Gtech pro does but without the HP calc. It also sports a backlit lcd display. I bought the Jap-spec one, it looks ten times better. The US spec is black and looks a lil different. I looked on about 20 sites for the cheapest price. Found it for $115.95 here. . It also has a two-stage shift light system, one saying shift up, the other saying you are at your set redline. It records 1/4 mile times, 0-100/200/400/1000 km times. 200-400 km times. Does a lot. It will be installed by Wednesday night. Expect a full DIY on Thursday.

The install should be the same as my GReddy TT DIY. Good luck though. Looks good.

I hope so, I plan on using your DIY as a jump start, if it's close enough I'll PM Derrick (CEO) and ask him to add it to your DIY. Either way, I'll post up some pics when it's done. When do you get your car back man?

I ask that because I'd like to meet up with you at some point. If that place did a good enough job I'll consider taking mine to them as well.

I have no idea when the car will be done. They take your car and put it in line with a bunch of other cars. When they finish a car, your's moves up a space, until it's finally in the bay (they have 3 bays, but one is for the AWD dyno which is always taken up (people from all over come to use it, they say it's 1 of 5 in the whole world). Right now they have a lot of work to do and are short a person so it's taking a lot longer. But I'll show it to you whenever. I'm going to be up in VT in August if you want to take the trip over. And I'll be at the Mid Atlantic meet if you are coming all that way.

smokie and or madwheel... would it be a logical purchase to make even if i wasnt running a turbo, im running nitrous actually but i like the idea behind the gtech, just not its reputation. it seems the hks unit would give plenty of useful information even if i wasnt really using it as a turbo time. thanks in advance

I love it man. I would still definately go with it. It's less money and does more so why not. It's only cheaper because you need to run more wires but HKS is definately a reputable company. I'd go with it. If you drive your car really hard then it may come in handy anyway. Apexi says their turbo timer is for NA & Turbo cars (right on the actual product. Smokie...Yeah man I'd meet up with ya, PM me for my #.

I suggest buying it where I did. They called me only an hour after my purchase, on a sunday, on a holiday weekend, just to confirm my order. Then the gentleman told me he would process the order and it will be shipped out tomorrow. Very nice people in my opinion.

Check out Smokie's, his is near perfect. I will post of any changes between the HKS and the Greddy. One site online said they used the same harness so the install should technically be the same.

hey madwheel... did you ever put it in yet? im considering either yours, smokies, or the apex-i one because it's small and sleek looking..

what do you reccomend? will the apex one works for our cars?
also, how hard was the install of the gauges? thanks.

the apex will work. Like all of them, we have to cut the harness and hardwire it all, isn't that bad, only 3 wires, use the pale yellow colored wire taps and you're all set. My friend has the apex-i one, very very tiny and limited functionality. it times, has a/f display (using a number) and a voltmeter. I did install the hks system. I love it without any regrets, looks great, works perfect, did everything it said it did and beyond.

Here's a couple pics...

It's red when you get to either of the two rpm shift points (user set), warning speed (user set) or when it flashes from blue to red, along with beeping, once it begins the countdown. It also beeps on shift points and speed warnings.

Another cool thing about it... If your rpm readout or speed readout is slightly off, it has learn modes that will better calibrate it to your specific car. Thing works awesome. I ran a 0-100kmh (62mph) in 7.6 sec. That's the only thing I got to take advantage of so far. I'm dragging at the track tomorrow and I will be comparing the unit info with the actual track time and see how close this thing really is. So far it has worked flawlessly and will look foward to purchasing more products from HKS. BTW, the vendor I listed that I bought it from is great. They called me only an hour after I purchased it through my computer to confirm the order, process, and ship it out. I got it very fast, in good packaging, and they were kind enough to add English instructions to it. Everything inside the actual product bix was in Japanese. The English documentation also includes all the features and "operation manual" Good luck man, you won't be disappointed.

good luck with oil temp gauges, i looked into and am having a professional shop do it. I don't want leaks (boilermaker made a diy). He fixed his DIY but used stainless lines which require some specialty tools that I don't have. Do a search type in "boilermaker" for user name, and for thread title "oil psi gauge". Good luck

No it doesn't matter if your turbo is in yet. You're tapping into the same wires, but the HKS system has different color websites. You should have a manual giving you a color code of what wire goes where. Match that to the Greddy DIY and it will work fine. You also need to go to the pinouts under the electric section of the DIYS to tap into the speed sensor, and rpm sensor (use the crank angle sensor pinout for rpms) - it's a blue wire.

I just typed this huge post but the f***** server lost it. SOB. Yeah HKS = good investment. Does it all. The US Spec is black and doesn't have the same backlight. Jap specs come in silver and speeds and distances are measure in metrics.

The main feature of any turbo timer is that it keeps the engine running after you take the key out. This allows time for oil to circulate in and out of the turbo, helping it to cool down and avoid heat soak. Your turbo will last longer this way. Run it for at least half a minute and most units can calculate how much time it needs to stay on automatically by "watching" the previous driving (measures spikes in dips in voltage, alternator is what causes this). A lot of them do other things as well. If you search you'll find a lot more information, along with the same I have given you.
