are grand ams really this slow?
Raced another grand am on the freeway today. I was doing 65, and he was behind me. He'd been kinda dodging traffic the whole time trying to get through the cars blocking his way.
A long open spot finally opened up and he moved over to the left lane. I downshifted, and immediately heard him downshift and so we went. Not only did he not pass me, but I slowly pulled on him the whole way. By 95mph I had probably a car or two on him.
Now this was a bit later model grand am. Maybe 96 or 98 ish. Whatever. But are grand ams really that slow?

i raced a friend a while back, with a v6 grand am, he kept up pretty well. He didnt pass me or anything, but i was still amazed at how it kept up, i thought that was pretty quick, which grand ams are u guys talking about. i always thought they were pretty quick.
eric
I used to have a grand am, it was a mid 80's (85 I think?) it had a V6 engine in it, and that thing was definately faster than my civic. It would get up and go really fast. The gas pedal was incredibly sensitive on it too. I dunno, I have an aunt that has a newer model grand am and I don't think its near as fast. Doesn't feel like it. Maybe its just the newer ones? I dunno

I don't know if it was or wasn't a V6 grand am.
I have a 2 door coupe, not a 4 door.
FWIW, SE grand ams do around mid to high 16's. The previous gen Grand Am GT was a 17 second car. The 98+ are 16 flat or so.
So in reality even the V6's aren't "safe" out of a civic's range. One of my closest friends has a 75th anniversary edition Grand Am GT and though he gets me off the line, our cars are fairly close. He wins usually, but it's close. If he spins too much I can win.
