Seriously though, I'm surprised they haven't been too accomodating...
Cops here in Edmonton didn't help much with my problems. Basically told me not to spend money on my vehicle if I didn't want it broken in to. Went so far as to tell me it was my fault it was broken in to becasue I asked for it.

Edmonton has a severe auto theft problem, its become something for organized crime as opposed to just some random guy on the street.

Things is 1) the police are understaffed and overstressed and 2) they just don't seem to want to do anything about, or haven't got a plan to do so.

They figure that insurance just takes care of everything anyways, so who gives a damn. When I got my car broken into, I filled out a report saying what was missing and that was the end of it, from what I've heard it was more or less the same for the 4 other Civics that got broken into that day in the parkade I was in.

damn i hope my car stays safe. i'm not worried about it being stolen since we are equipped with imobilizers. although i do worry about someone trying to steal my **** even though i have an alarm. last time my car was at west ed it chirped 3 times when i unlocked it to tell me someone was thinking about breaking in. there's a chance it could have been something else but my shock sensor isn't to high in sensitivity.

I won't even go to west ed anymore. My friend was there with his truck, came out of the mall, and a guy was in his his truck. He looked at the guy and said 'can I help you?', and the guy said "No, that's okay, I lost my keys. I have another set coming down.". Let's put it this way, the truck was a 15 year old, raised up, propane and rust powered Chev 4X4. My friend kindly beat the crap out of the guy, and thne called the cops. They found 9 vehicles broke in to in the same parkade, and figure it was the same guy.

After my car is done getting some of the exterior stuff done, I won't be driving it to work this summer. Bought an accord for that. Rusted out, nothing done to it, and good on gas. That way they might leave the thing alone. I can see my car disappearing downtown if I were to bring it to work with me.

Heh, the price of doing up yer car I guess.

I know far too many people who have had their vehicles broken into at West Ed. And the interesting part is, with the signs posted up that say something like "Do not leave valuables...." and "There is an auto theft problem, please lock your car" thing... it pretty much limits the liability the mall has in ensuring the safety of their customers vehicles...

I got my Civic broken into at Commerce Place here downtown, underground, heated parkade w. cameras all over the place. Alarms don't really make a huge difference, because nobody responds to them anyways, plus it will only go off for a few moments before whoever is stealing your car/sh*t pops the hood and uplugs the battery or cuts the wires to the siren.

Two-way alarms (one of which I have right now) are decent, but they have 2 problems: 1) its easy to get out of range, I have a top of the line Compustart mile, but when I'm at the Univesity and theres 3 concrete buildings and a concrete parkade between my car and I the remote gets no signal and 2) anyone with a ricey muffler can set off your stage 1 sensor and cause your alarm to beep, so over time you kind of just start to ignore it.

Setting your sensor to be too sensitive means that it'll go off when anything from the aforementioned ricer to an ETS bus drives by, it can get pretty annoying having your remote constantly buzzing in your pocket. Proximity sensors are just altogether useless unless you park you car in an open field, because people are going to be walking by it all the time and kids, especially, just love to toy w. proximity sensors.

My idea? A taxidermized dog sitting on your dash appearing to be sleeping. Nobody would touch your **** then. In South Africa theres an alarm system available that makes flames shoot out the sides of your car, I'm not sure their legal here. Malodorants are out of the question too unless you want your car to stink and any kind of piercingly loud siren is easily disabled or ignored w. ear protection.

Thing w. putting **** in your trunk is, if anybody sees you doing it, whether its valuable or not, they will try to break into your car/trunk to steal it. So when you do put **** in your trunk at West Ed., make sure nobody is around watching you do it.

ANother good spiece of advice is
1) if you have a bangin' stereo, turn it off a block or two before you arrive at your destination, this lessens the likely hood of attention
2) don't leave anything valuable in your car that can be seen
3) park in high traffic areas where there are constantly people/cars roaming by
4) don't blab/showoff your stuff to people you don't know. That is a sure way of getting broken into. When people open their pieholes and their trunks/hoods etc. you are setting yourself up for a problem.
5) keep your car looking stealth. If you have a deck/stereo/woofers etc. keep them invisble to people passing by. There is nothing you can do about rims/exhaust etc but the less you have visible to catch someone's eyes, the better off you are. And that goes for anything you may have in your car. Jackets, wallets, hats, cds, shopping bags. A lot of this is common sense knowledge. If you don't want attention, keep your mouth and car quiet

I have been broken into and luckily my stuff wasn't taken but I opened my mouth showed off my stuff and it got me a broken HATCH Back window and a 500 deposit gone. Before that, I didn't have an alarm, was in high school, had a system in my trunk, never got broken into because I always turned my stereo off 2 blocks before I got there. I never told anyone but my close friends what I had and everything was cool. Its all common sense.
