Exhaust Opinions

I have been doing some research on exhaust systems and lots of stressing over what to get for my ride first. i ahve come to the conclusion that wheels are needed first. I have some designs picked out but that will wait for another thread. What i am wondering about is the new Magnaflow Catback systems available for the civics. I looked them up and they are claiming 10 HP increase and I know that exhaust systems will only give you little gains and I am fine by that. The exhaust note is nice. Althought they never had a sound file of a civic, the other ones I listened to were almost alike and I think it would be a great sounding system becuase I am not one for a system that barks like a lawnmower or makes my car sound like a friggin moped. I can get this system through work for $375.00 and probably get it installed for under a hundred bucks. Is it worth it? I was also looking at the DNX system from Falken but I think the price is too much. Opinions?? Orders??

i think u should get rims first, then a oem lip kit, then tint, then exhaust. but i was thinking of getting the magnaflow cat for the car as well, i already have the straight piping, i was gonna try to order it, but the guy wanted to see my car first to tell me which one would be the best, i told him i'd come see him in april.

for sure in that order too, but me and phil are more for looks, we like to look pretty. haha. but ya, if you want performance, exhaust doesn't really help much alone, but combined with intake/header/exhaust then it'll be worth it. well as worth it as our engine's can dish out. haha. prolly not alot. but that's just me, your sedan is blue right? i say for a wicked look, oem lip kit, hyper black rims, doesn't matter what kind, any will look wicked on blue, and then tint that ****, lower it if u have the money, and tint, and to finish it off CF hood, omg, u'll be such a pimp, almost as big as phil.... haha.

Exaust systems don't really do much for the D17 series engines, you will not get as much of a gain as manufacturers claim.

Magnaflow is a good brand, you look at Apexi, HKS Hyper systems...check the exaust section of this site you will see what other members are using and you might get a better idea.

The only way to determine that is a dyno test before and after.

When modding your car you have to think do you really need this and that ? what gains will you get (if you are performance oriented).

Other ways to get siginificant powergains from the D17 engine is by port/polish, Forced induction, upgraded flywheels, clutches etc, chipping the ecu....

Personally if you are getting rims and still want some decent handling without paying too much stay with 15 or 16 inch rims. Those sizes will get the best handling, when your doing lapping days, auto x, and drag racing. 17 or larger if you are going for the show look.

I have the magnaflow cat back exhaust system. Its nice b/c it doesn't sound like a fart can and you can drive to calgary w/o ppl getting annoyed with you on the highway. Performance gains: I don't notice a huge difference. The catback was my first mod.

You should get:
Catback Exhaust
Rims, shortly after (18' or 19' = 20-40 horse power gains ) JK
then a mugen lip (like my new one) oem sides, and oem rear
Tints
CAI
RS grill
then a spoiler (the flat one you were talking about)
BUT FORSURE you should get a decal with me this spring..!
You should go for a gunmetal look.. Gunmetal rims, CF hood, CF lips, Blk Titanium Exhaust tip.

If you have a sedan, the rear bumper will have to be cut to fit the exhaust. Check into which cat-back systems fit without any modifications.

I was looking at getting some black/gunmetal rims but my problem is i have those chrome accents on my ride I would like to get rid of. Is there a paint or replacement parts that i could get to either match the blue or turn to gunmetal? I was also looking at replacing the front grill and I don't know if any of you guys have noticed that there is a 2004 special edition civic coming out and it has an open style grill similar to the RS grill w/o the "rs" I think it looks hot and I am going to give Honda a call on a price that is unless someone knows where to get them cheaper? Thanks for the input guys, I have too much pondering on how far I want to take my ride aesthetically. Carbon fibre...........hmmmmmm?

Just sell your Civic for a better car..........

I once had a Civic.....2 Dr....Mangaflow Cat....AEM CAI intake....Lowerd....17's.....Neuspeed Upper Strut bar.....

It was nice...but it was all show no go........

WHO AM I KIDDING!!! I miss my Civic....

My advice to you is to bypass all performance mods until your ready to either do an engine swap or turbo setup. Trying to get any extra power out of a D17 is like trying to squeeze water out of a watermelon; it ain't gonna happen. The RS look is sweet, JDM is the way to go. Talk to Jae about prices cuz I think Silent Rage has some cool sHi T. Sojsboy (Will) might be able to help you out as well.

I'll have some 17" rims for sale soon........

You can try ebay for accessories like that it is usually cheaper, or some of the vendors on this site might have them as well. Check out the marketplace section.

Agreed with Kit, as mentioned in above posts forced induction is one of the few ways to get additional torque and hp from the D17. Turbo is also a pain in the *** because you have to make sure the internals can handle the boost, you need a upgraded fuel management system (to tune the system properly), and maybe some new internals for the engine . Swap is a bit easier, but costly and you will need a new transmission as well.

However, chipping the ecu is a good idea to get modest gains, check out the jet ecu in the tech section.

Engine performance is hard to obtain, might as well go for either show or handling.

Right now my goal is to go for handling, and engine performance (if I can get any positve gains from the engine).

pretty much for performance, u can go fast, but u need money. swap would be recommended, but as u know, 99% of the civics in edmonton are all show and no go.

^agreed with both Renny and Will

Renny, I'd like to see you with a full sport suspension soon! Lol....
The Civic would be awesome in an Auto-X with just a beefy suspension and some good tyres. ECU is cool to, but once you start....you can't stop...

Will, hmm....you said you have a secret weapon this summer.......

PS - We need another Pho day, missed some major players like Renny, Keith, Dennis and Laurence.

Keep in touch boys!

Tein is probally the choice i am going with.

The Neuspeed upper front strut bar combined with the rear sway bar, i am picking up from speedstars, should provide some decent handling i hope.

turbo is the way to go. swap is waaay too expensive and much more difficult than turbo. some guy(dont remember his name) runs 9psi on stock engine w/no problems. im planning on getting teins(ss) in the spring also so renny, if you hear of a good price lemme know, and vise versa.
and kit, definately gotta get the boys (and girls?) out for a meet in the spring. (go away snow)

look in the group buys. someone has a GB going for a magnaflow catback for $280 shipped. it says that it ends at the end of the year, but he's still taking orders if you want.

Dennis, I am getting my suspention from PE in april. I am probally going with the Tien springs and aftermarket shocks. I am not sure about the coilover system though, I do not think I will be adjusting my height all that much. I am planning to drop it 1.5 inches.
