more boost requires more strength from the internals.

if you want to lower your compression (8.5:1) and turn the boost up past 12psi, the block guard certainly wouldn't hurt.

if you looked at the pics from 99blackvtec (i think thats his name- the big-mouth who says he's got like 300hp in his vic) you'll see that looking at the engine deck the cylinders seem like free standing tubes, this block guard adds strength towards the centering of your cylinders helping resist the forces that might cause your cylinser sleve to crack and send a piston out the side of your block.

it might restrict cooling abit, but if you turbo up your car, you might as well upgrade your cooling system anyway...

What he said. But it also prevents the cylinder from walking. It gives the cylinder a "base" at the top instead of just the spot where it is planted in the block. I'd say it would be a good thing to have even if the car was running 6-7psi. Cylinders walk over time if you drive hard, even if it's not boosted. That's why they make N/A block guards too... what Black99Vtec had. But for $65-75, you don't have that much to lose if you are going to do other internals at the same time IMO.

block guards are useless in high boost and really only work if you have them welded in and the blocked decked afterwards. you would be better off buying new sleeves.

I can't honestly see anybody here running a high boost D17A. By that time... it's not worth the money.
