Crankshaft Girdle

Car developed a bad knock so I decided to check the rod bearing on the suspected cylinder to find out the bearing completely exploded...my question is I pulled the 8 bolts holding the girdle but doesn't seem to want to come loose. Am I missing something that's holding it?

Need to remove it so I can mic the crank journal to see if its still salvageable.

Thanks

Re: Crankshaft Girdle

Engine out of the car...Upside down.....
Rear main holder off, oil pump and pickup tube off,
I pulled the 8 bolts holding the girdle
Problem. I count 10 bolts in my pic. Girdle may have to pry loose as it sits on dowel pins, but only removing 8 of the 10 bolts ain't enough.

Re: Crankshaft Girdle

haha sorry yes there were 10 removed plus the 4 holding the pickup in place. I have to remove the oil pump as well in order to remove the girdle?

Re: Crankshaft Girdle

I was just quoting from "crankshaft removal" section. If the pump isn't in the way of lifting the girdle straight up (or dropping it out, whichever), I don't see why you really need it out until the crankshaft comes out.
Do remove the pickup tube though.

I just need to get it out of the way to check the journal, don't want to pull the motor if I can put a new bearing in.

It should pry out then.

Re: Crankshaft Girdle

it's take a little force to break it lose. Wiggle it back and forth. I had to do the same a few weeks ago, I heard a knock in the engine and wanted to remove the main caps/girdle to inspect the play in the rod ends. Everything looks and feels to be inspect for me, but I suspect piston slap. Took my block to the machine shop, and they are going to bore the sleeves 1 piston size bigger because of how badly the bore was.

Good luck on your build, also my machine shop guy said Honda’s bearings and their color code chart is bs. Just buy bearings for that engine set and be done with it. Depending on how bad the crank journals really are.
