Who wants to be the first with a custom D17 Quaife LSD?
Josh aka Drivetofast has his old D17a1 open differential sitting around, so he decided to compare it with the DC5-R LSD that he pulled out of my motor. Apparently he found out that the LSD bearings hold the same exact part number and the bolts holes line up. Theoretically, with a little custom work, he could probably get a Quaife, Kaaz, Cusco, DC5-R or any other K20/K-series differential to fit.
Here's the bad news:
- notice how I put "custom" in the title. The holes on the differential gear need to be enlarged to accommodate the K20 differential bolts. You will need to drill them out slightly bigger.
- the axles are bigger for the K20 ... a new/custom half shaft will have to be used. We're guessing a B-series or an Accord half shaft will work. More clarification will follow once he gets off work today and checks this post.
other than those things, according to him, the measurements for the differential (ie. height, width, etc) appear to be exactly the same
so who's gonna be the first?

I know it sounds silly, but we're not exactly overflowing with money, so you will have to provide the LSD and tranny... this is also experimental. Hopefully someone has an extra D17 tranny lying around in case this doesn't work (but we're pretty sure it will)
oh yeah .. and the phantom grip "lsd" is a piece of crap ... in my opinion. not to put anyone's opinion down or anything.
I will have a tranny if you guys want to use it as experiment??? You guys can sell it w/ the lsd, if everything work out. You have to pay for the shipping though. A little help for the d17s.
Have to wait until the shop pull it out first though.

well, tell me what I have to do, and I'll buy the lsd and tranny. I don't have much experience with lsd's or trannys for that matter.

civic_redline: if you want to donate the tranny for the cause, that would be good. 2nd gear popping out is not a problem, Josh is only looking for one to test fit. we would do the labor and everything for it ... we don't know exactly which axles to use as of yet, but we are gonna mess around with some k20 and b-series axles to see if we can frankenstein some axles. for testing purposes, we will use a DC5-R lsd ... if you want the finished product to be put into your car, we will put it in, parts and everything for you ... but the cost will be $1100 for parts, labor and everything... otherwise we will put the tranny back to stock, at no charge. This is just FYI if you're interested.
blahman: I can't go in-depth on how to do it yet other than what was already covered, since there are a few fine edges we need to iron out. We don't know for sure if it will work, which is why we're still on the experimenting stage to see what will fit and what will not. Josh is almost positive the LSD will fit ... but the only problem we have now is finding the correct-sized axles.
The D17 does not use a half shaft ... K series does, so we need to frankenstein some axles. We are gonna attempt to experiment with some B-series axles and K-series (anyone have any they can donate?) ... we do have a pair of D17 axles already though.

this one is the DC5-R LSD with the D17 gear

the D17 is on the left and DC5-R LSD on the right

the D17 is on the left and DC5-R LSD on the right

and like i said the bolts are biger on the K20 diff so the gear will have to be drilled out to fit

this would be really good for you turbo guys out there.... all that extra torque off the line could be transfered to both tires instead of just one....
traction = faster times on the 1/4 mile and a must for you auto crossers and road racers

Don't laugh but look into an obx diff. Its a quaife knockoff, costs half the price new and comes with a lifetime warranty. A couple local hondas use them. 300whp, 400whp, 500whp and no problems.

A noob question for ya? What will this do if it works properly? I would be interested but I wouldn't want to be the lab rat I just bought a new motor so I have to wait a little bit before I can possibley break something else.

it would make both tires transfer power to the ground, not just one.
The problem with a spyder gear type diff. is that they will transfer power to the tire that has the least amount of traction. When one tire breaks loose, all the power is then transfered to that tire. This kills your accelleration and powered turning.

I've never had a d17 gear in my hand so bare with me
Would it be possible to have a machine shop make a sleeve that would fit inside the bigger hole where the bolts go thru the lsd? Its the gear thats threaded yes? I would think that drilling and tapping the gear would weaken in. Wouldnt it be easier and safer with a sleeve in the lsd?
