Brand New Car and Turbo?
Brand New Car and Turbo?
Hi... I'm getting a 2005 Civic 'n thinking of going boosted...
Is it a bad idea to boost a brand new car?
How many miles should I go before going boosted?
I tried searching but apparently no one ever bring this up...
thanks for your inputs

i would let the car have its break in period which would be a good 2000-+ miles at least.
change the oil at 2k miles with genuwine honda oil and ride that out until 4000 miles. i believe their is a syntnetic* in honda motor oils that leave a layer of protection on your engine's internals/pistons/etc ? i could be wrong...

I've read a lot of articles about break ins...
some says... there are no break in period in newer cars...
some says... to baby our car for the first 500 - 1000 miles...
some says... drive it hard for the first 20 miles...
personally I would check the manual book when I got the car...
any opinions about this?
so Turbo gotta wait eh...
there's a part of me that's saying "dude... it's a new car..." and there's this other part that can't wait to be boosted...
thanks for the inputs!

honestly. I would wait at least 40,000 miles. Its better to boost a car more broken in. Everything will be set better (seals), from all the heat its been through. A brand new car boosted would have more problems I would say. Its also better to get some good mileage out of it before all the problems you will have being boosted. WHy break a new car? This is all just my opinion, somewhat fact. I boosted my car around 90,000 miles, and it handles 10psi very nicely. the clutch had some issues, but it held up pretty good for having 100,000 miles on it and being stock, and teaching 4 people to drive stick. haha. now I need to fix a few things from not taking a little precaution. the motor is in prestine shape though, runs/sounds so much better than stock brand new.

thank you so much... yeah this clears the clouds...
I know it's a common sense... but yeah... the urge of boost biased my judgement... and I was hoping that I was wrong in that common sense
as for other cars around 'vic price range... sadly there aren't much options... I'm in Indonesia btw... imported cars are so much more expensive... let's see... maybe around 50k USD for an RSX... for me... Civic is the best option in terms of looks 'n performance at its price range... it's about 22k USD I think...
thanks again for all your inputs!

that really sucks how much they charge. I got my lx for 16 out the door. brand new of course. I still paid a little much.
Ive been told by a few people that tune cars around here, its better to turbo a car with high mileage than low mileage. But I agree about the srt-4, or cobalt ss. They shouldnt be that much more than a civic. They are comparable prices in the US, though, not sure about indonesia.
Your also talking about the rsx-s for 50,000 right? if not, how much is the better model, whatever its called in indonesia?

dont listen to them, wait til the warranty is up. Cuz it will be voided, and you'll have more probs than my car would I bet. I have 99,000 miles on mine boosted.

never heard or seen any srt-4 or cobalt ss around here...
I'm not sure about that rsx-s... I didn't ask much about it...
back to topic...
so yeah... I've been learning about engine break in these past few days... but there are too many ways... one thing for sure... simply put... turbo ruins the engine because it's not mature enough yea?
thanks again for the responses

you want it broken in but you may be looking to get different internals;
pistons, rods, etc and maybe head work.
anyway i would be more worried about the D17 stock breaking in than a somewhat built D17 boosted at mileage 0, despite the strength of the stock engine.

so... it's fine to go boost after I build the internals even if it's under 500 miles??
if it is... how far should I build it? will lower compression pistons 'n con.rods be enough?

The power of the dark side... argh it's creeping in...
hehe seriously what about the engine break in? would it matter if I mess with the internals?
it's not the warranty that I'm concerned about... it's more to engine break in, turbo and engine in the long run...

Ok. I just talked to my friend who is a tech at Honda. He says you should wait till at least the first oil change. He told me it should take about that long for the rings to seat and that if you boosted at 0 miles you would probably blow your motor. The original oil in the car is full of assembly lube and additives that help break in the motor. So drive your car for about 3000 miles, install the turbo and change to synthetic, then run around 6 psi for the next 2000 miles. I'm gonna delete all the misinformed propaganda I was posting earlier in this thread. Sorry
