Mazda are going to release their 3 series with 160HP, starting around $15,000. Other companies are following suit. Looking at the demand for such a weak car (civic non SI) - it only makes sense for Honda to bump up the power in the base model, by dropping the K20 in. That would give the civic the boost it needs, and probably increase sales. I predict that honda is sensing this, and will eventually drop the D17 for the K20.

From a buisness standpoint it also makes a lot of sense. If you look at how many of honda's new vehicles use the K20, they could save a lot of money (production / tooling costs) by dropping the D17 altogether - and only produce the K20 and its variants (k24).

I don't know, I think instead of dropping $10,000 into a swap than adding all of those accessories (intake, header, turbo, etc) that it will just end up costing more rather than just waiting for the K20'ed civic, which would have a price point of other economy cars (around $15,000)....
You don't understand the dynamics here. Most people don't buy the new Civic and say I'm gonna do a swap, they buy it because it's a nice car. Once they have a Civic and start to make improvements, a swap is one choice. Spending $10,000 or more realistically $5-7,000 for the K20 swap usually is a lot easier to stomach than the prospect of a new car. And lets face it, a Mazda with 160hp will get get crushed by a K powered Civic, even if it's a K24 powered Civic.

Of course Honda will drop the D17, that's a no brainer, but they're under no obligation to recall all the D17s and replace them with K20s. And as absurd as that statement sounds, your statement about Honda putting a K20 in the Civic really has no effect on what people will do with the 950,000 7th gen Civics with D motors in them. Well, it will make more K-series motors available to swap into them.

So what will the people do who buy their little Civic because it has nice wheels and decide they want a little more power, the same thing Civic owners have been doing for the past 8 years, put a better motor in it. Now they'll have another less expensive choice, the K24.
