same thing as an oil catch can. On a boosted car, you aren't supposed to pressurize the crankcase. The stock air/oil separator (part of the PCV system), is plugged into the intake manifold. That's fine though, the intake manifold doesn't see a positive pressure. So the air can be passed in the direction of the intake manifold from the engine. But on a boosted car, you would be pressurizing that system in the opposite direction. Pressure would come from the intake manifold into the air/oil separator and crankcase. That means that air wouldn't be able to be separated, but the opposite... forced in. Also, should any oil come out (shouldn't but can), the catch can (such as Moroso above) would catch it and still filter out the air.
Now... some have the filter (as above) and some don't. the ones with the filter vent to the atmosphere. The ones that don't (namely GReddy, Weapon R, and OBX), get rerouted to the intake before the turbo... so there isn't any pressure. There are other places to route it. But rerouting back into the system is the legal way (if that really matters)
The End.

My friend had that on his eclipse, a few months later his car started blowing white smoke out the exhaust(not a little a lot). He thought his turbo was going out on him, he brought it to a performance shop by us and they put the old setup back on and everything was fine after that. Will this also happen on a 7th gen or is this only a DSM thing. What would cause the white smoke for having a breather?

definately not. eclipses are known for blown headgaskets (420A engine) and crank walk (4G63 engine).
I had a breather on my old eclipse and it was fine.

so is it recommended to pick up a breather for a non turbo vic? Right now i've got it setup like stock with the hose leading into the intake piping.

only boosted ppl need a catch can.
