What happens when you use hydrogen or helium gas in ur engine
I was just wondering, what would happen if hydrogen or helium gas was to enter the air intake. If anyone's a chemistry genious or has more commonsense than me, an answer is greatly appreciated.

Helium won't do a damn thing except take up space in the cylinder.. and all the bad things that follow with that... ::Think WATER::
Hydrogen would do a lot actually. Depending how much you use, it could be good or bad. Hydrogen has A LOT more energy than gasoline. You can use a little and you actually will get an increase in power. And since it's a mixture of hydrogen and fuel, and not just fuel, you get an increase in mileage. Hydrogen also burns clean with no emissions. You can't equate nitrous oxide to hydrogen though because they are barely similar. One is an oxidizer, the other is a combustant. But the same applies that too much of one will create a "charge" that is too much for the engine to handle and you can explode your engine.

problem with hydrogen vehicles right now is that scientists are worried about the exhausts. Combusting hydrogen in the engine produces CO2 and H2O as the exhaust "fumes" and scientists are worried that excess water in the atmostphere will weaken our ozone and let in more ultraviolet rays. I find that kinda stupid, they say that each vehicle will release about 4% more H2O into the atmosphere per year or something like that. I dunno if i have my facts strait but some1 correct me if i'm wrong. That's my take on this whole matter. And yeah, don't put pure hydrogen into your car...unless death is ur wish...i'm sure you've heard of the H-bomb, its like 100 times stronger than the atom bomb. >_<

It is more combustable than nitrous. This means that there are more ways to light it off. Hydrogen gas can be lit off with an extremely small energy source. This means that it is way more dangerous.
Hydrogen is not a source of oxygen, like nitrous. When you use nitrous you add Nitrous and gasoline. If you were to run hydrogen, you would have to add an oxygen source.
hmm..... instead of supplimenting the nitrous with gasoline, you could, in fact, use hydrogen. BUT the thing with hydrogen is that it will light off in the manifold before it ever gets into the cylinder. So you would have to inject it directly into the cylinder, which is extremely hard to do. But i am sure if someone figured it out it would work well.
But who would want a 20 lb bottle of liquid hydrogen in the back of their car? Sure the nitrous would be cold and would cause an explosion by just the pressure. But if the hydrogen were to light off when the cylinder breaks, that would cause one hell of an explosion.
Just a balloon filled with hydrogen gas will produce a fireball 10ft across. Just think what a 20lb bottle of it would do.

Like I said up top... It depends how much you use. Of course it has to be a tiny amount because the energy of hydrogen's combustion is exponential to that of gasoline. Eitherway, it's been done before. And hydrogen was injected directly into the intake, not the cylinder. It's still not anything anybody should do, I'm just stating that it can and has been done under controlled conditions.

don't race cars use methyl alcohol? methyl is one carbon, one oxygen and four hydrogens, so i'm guessing there are practical applications for hydrogen, just not in commuter vehicles (you can't see when that stuff catchs on fire, either)
plus space shuttles use hydrogen and oxygen for fuel, but look at the fire that causes...
edut: completely forgot about fuel cell technology. thats how you use hydrogen in your commuter car at this point.
