Automatic Turbos
I just wanted to start a thread about something that I've researched (and seached on the forums here) about. I have an automatic 2002 Civic Ex, and I've been looking around at the turbos available. I wanted to see what you guys had to say about putting a turbo on my automatic. I've heard you can, and then I've heard that it completely F's up your automatic. I've heard that it's sweet b/c there's no loss of boost (Because you don't have to take your foot off the gas in order for the car to shift), and then I've heard that the first time you step on the gas your transmissons gonna fall out
. Tell me what you guys have heard/think. I really want to see what the real deal is, because I don't want to gun it out of school one day and have the cops come over b/c my car is smoking and rolled into a ditch. Thanks.

Also guys, if you could tell me the websites for the people who have turbos available, it would be greatly appreciated

Okay, I dont know about our car specifically but my friend turbo'd his 1997 auto prelude about 2 weeks ago and heres what the shop told him.
His tranny will last only like 6 months MAX. He has step-tronic mode (shift an autobasically, option on preludes though most were defective) and he MUST use steptronic mode. So yes, the tranny will f-ck up. He is doing a manual conversion this December.
Hope that helps a little.

theres 1 or 2 people on this site with a turbo'd AT, i havent heard any complaints so far. only thing is you would want a transmission fuild cooler, this will keep your tranny from becoming damaged. alos you may not NEED a torque converter bu it might be a good idea. i have a AT as well and will be turbo'd as soon as Mike from SF tells me my kit is ready. i dont think our transmission would go out any faster than a MT, just keep the boost within reason and you'll be fine.
lucky13matt what turbo kit do you have on your car
how much boost are you running and how do you shift
i meant lilke i first gear at you can run it up almost to redline till it change to second.
i have an lx and when i push the car till redline the mph meter points around 40mph.

I really want to know this. If I'm at a red light and I gun it (I mean keep the pedal on the floor till I hit the next light) is my transmission gonna F up. I mean I really can't afford to have my transmission blown out, lol. Also, How much does it cost to change my car to a manal conversion. I wonder if the dealership does it. And will this void my warrenty?

I worship turbo civics...the fact that a $14-17K car can outrun $45K "sports" cars is just amazing to me...i dream of a turbo and i shall have one someday

im pretty sure that if u turbo the car, then anything associated with the engine and or that it is connected to will void the warranty on that. ive never seen a dealer do a auto manual conversion. and if they agreed to do it, i still wouldnt let them do it bc there is a larger risk of them FFFFFFFFFFFFFFF'n up ur turbo setup and touching something they shouldnt touch and then ur even more screwed

OK, let me refrase (sp) what I said. Currently right now all I have is an AEM short ram intake, which I talked to the Honda guy and he said it woulden't void my warrenty. I still live with my parents and my dad dosen't want me to void the warrenty right now in case something happens, which is understandable. So while I'm at home, I'm going to keep the mods simple and try not to void the warrenty. Since all I have is the intake, I was wondering about the auto to manual swap. I figured that if the Honda dealership would do it, it might be covered on the warrenty. I mean that I'm still going to pay for it, but I wondered if the warrenty would be voided if I changed it. I don't want the warrenty to be voided during the swap, that's why I wouldent do it. I wondered how much this would cost. Also, if I can be persuaded that my automatic will still work with the turbo in it, I wouldent swap. But perferably, I would like to swap b/c I love manuals. I don't figure that swapping to a manual trans would cost more than 1000 dollars. I don't know, can you guys tell me what you think.
Brad
Also I wouldent be getting the turbo unstil later when the warrenty ends or I move out.

i have a 2003 civic coupe hx CVT auto tranny. Was wondering how that will put up with a turbo. This is a weird automatic tranny, it does not shift and is basically like driving on one gear. Once I hit red line, i stay at red line. I have ran 4 bottles of nitrous through the tranny, it still in like brand new.
trubo cars
Its best to get all the parts you need before you turbo your car. A tranny cooler is must. So is an oil cooler since it gets hot and it'll help prolong the turbo and your car. Next would be the torque converter. It use to be very expensive to mod a torque converter, but now a days its fairly cheap. Check out JMOUSA.com, they do the best work for imports. Don't go to Level 10 I heard they do sucky job for imports. Those couple of parts will last you for a very long time. OH and remember to use performance tranny fluid. It'll give you smoother shifts and it'll be more precise. If you want to go the extra mile you can get tranny valve bodys and such to increase performance from the tranny. People don't know that if you check out http://www.first-inc.co.jp/buddyclub/m_news.htm the makers of the Buddy Club wheels they have a special computer made especially for automatics. With the computer unit you can change your shift points and such. Just think staying in gear longer just like a 5spd and getting the max performance out of your turbo. I don't own a 7th Gen car since i bought the 6th gen a while back. But my next project would be a Nissan 240sx w/ auto automatic SR20DET. I personally have read up on tons of automatic turbos. Heck the first one I wanted was the Eclipse GS-T. But I heard it can't compare to the SR20det motor.

Yeah, I'm heavily into 240's and the such, but there's something about the SR20's that easier for you than me in my Civic. My automatic Civic wasen't made to handle a turbo. The SR20DET's came with an automatic version, so the transmission was made to handle the turbo. Now, if your talking about the 6000 dollar S15 SR20, that only come in manual, but the S14 and S13's were both made in automatics. You have an unfair advantage over me
With an automatic you will run consistent times. I have a 01 civic ex (auto). I just heard different things about having an auto and a manual. But i'm really trying to save up for a K series.
