Here's a restaurant worth going the distance if you like Chinese. It's been voted the best Chinese restaurant in the Bay Area for 2 or 3 consecutive years and still holds first place. It's called Little Shin Shin, in Piedmont (Oakland). Some of the food isn't cheap, but I've always found the food to be worth the price they give it. Their service iand people are very friendly while some of their waiters and waitresses are good to converse with. When I suspected something different or wrong with their food, they don't forget it and they take it seriously. It's a great place which I wish was a bit larger, but by not visiting that place one, you'd be missing out on a lot. If I could afford it, I'd eat there every day. In fact, the food is so good, I would regret moving from the Bay Area just because of that restaurant. Might seem like I'm exaggerating but it's really that good. Their menu has a vast selection of Chinese foods plus restaurant specials.
Suggested plates: Shin Shin Special Prawns (mild or hot), Stir Fried Chinese Greens w/garlic, String Beans w/beef or chicken, etc. covered in Oyster sauce, Variety Seafood Soup.
The Litte Shin Shin
4258 Piedmont Ave, Oakland

Most dishes vary from say $4 to $9 a plate.
Soup can be as expensive as $5 a bowl for say, to serve one - two people.
They do have family/group meals that go from $25-$50 if you have a lot of people, but I've never ordered from there.
Beer/wine seems to be fairly priced and adequately selected.
Take out is always possible but I don't think the food is as good in a carton. Much better when you're sitting down and have the hot plate right in front of you.
Seriously you should check it out and tell me what you think about it.
