When they take it apart, they will easily be able to tell that it had gotten wet. After that, they will charge him for the replacement phone he got on his next bill.

I sent back a flip phone to T-Mobile that was snapped into 2 pieces claiming a manufacturers defect, which was the only way to get a new one free of charge since I didn't have insurance.
I did that once in 2 different accounts and it worked.
