bgoetz, whether he was stock or not, he was no faster than a stock jetta. the only thing i'm trying to get across here is that you seem to think that he would pull a couple car lengths on a stock jetta, and based upon his race with you, that's simply not true.

either way, you still deserve credit for doing as well as you did, because even against a jetta that's no faster than a stock jetta, you did very well all things considered!

Let me put this in perspective... YOU KNOW THAT 1.8Ts VW.. can't run BOVs? You mean DV? Our cars run on MAF only and will run lean if we use a BoV that doesnt recirculate. The intake is what you are hearing.. the loud psshhhh.

Second if he had a chip.. first of all.. torque wouldnt even let you get the jump on a GTi or a jetta from stop.

Upgraded turbo? Ive heard upgrade pushes the 1.8t near the 300bhp zones.

GIAC isn't the best chip for a 1.8t btw :-p.

Also I'm not calling BS but you probably beat an older model 1.8t with the engine code AWW with nothing but intake(Chipping would have destroyed your car from stop to roll all the way down).. those AWW engines are pushing 150 crank.

AWP pushes 180 crank.(definitely would have been different)

damn i was going to post way back on page 1 again and say it's a diverter valve and not BOV, My friend at work has one in his 2003 modded 1.8T doesn't have all that much done to it. It was probably just his intake with a diverter that made the sound you were talking about, They sound much different then a BOV, I would say deeper. My girlfriend has a 2004 stock and you can hear the turbo spinnin when you punch it.

My other friend at work has a red R32, That thing is a beast. I work for a company that supports 700 dealerships nationwide, servers, integration, and our custom program of course. Our parking lot looks like an exotic car dealership, plus I can get cars for cheap sometimes , Also i can connect to any of our dealers and check out cars and everything associated with them. a little of topic but it's on the subject of cars.

An AWP 1.8T starts out with 180 hp to the crank. Adding an intake will make the diverter valve sound louder, thus what you probably heard. Plus with an exhaust, he would most likely be around 160 hp at the wheels. Chipped, he would be closer to 200 at the wheels and should be doing low to mid 14's.

A T3/T4 turbo is not usually used on the 1.8T. Earlier models used a K03, while later models (2002 up) used a K03 Sport which is a hybrid of sorts. A small upgrade would be a K04 kit which would place it around 235 at the wheels. Next jump would be a GT28 which would be approaching 300 depending on the other mods. After that point, unless he had a limited slip, you would have seen him smoke the tires all the way to third.

Golf/Jettas with the upgrades referred to as stage 3 (GT 28 with 3 inch exhaust, injectors, chip, intake) have done 12's, and there is a slip floating around that someone did 11. And I do admit that his mods were lengthy, having spend at least 10 grand with the limited slip, weight reduction, slicks, etc.

Being that I own both cars, nearly stock Civic (intake only) and a stock Jetta, I can say without a doubt, there is no way that the Civic should ever beat the Jetta. Now there are slower years of Golf/Jettas, since the 180 hp model came out in 2002 and all Beetles are the 150 model. But the platform is proven and there are numerous companies that have learned how to extract good power from it. But the one thing VW has not done is changed each motor to make it tuner unfriendly.

^^^It was without a doubt a newer modle (not 05 though) and insted of t3/t4 I am betting he said K04 (I just heard the 4 after I asked what type turbo upgrade and assumed t3/t4). As for if he had it or not I guess that is debatable. He said the turbo took it from 180hp to 200hp (which he has obviously never had a dyno or he would not be spouting off crank #s). All that I know is what he said. As far I me beating stock Jettas I know for sure that one was a newer 1.8t the other may have been an older one (the one that I pulled the most cars on). I do know that the car had atleast I/E and I guess a DV (sounded just like a BOV though). So how much hp would that get. Maybe the 20 he claimed at the crank???

Again not bashing you. I'm just rather suprised that even with a decent driver.. I had my girl who has just recently learned to drive stick smoke me in her 03 civic ex.

The intake by itself makes a loud PSSHHH. DV by itself or with the intake would not make a big audible sound. It's the case of maybe a lying jetta driver spouting off lies and a bad driver. Again not bashing you. Grats on your victory.

But even stock with the later models with the AWP engines.. even if you had the typical IHE combo.. it'll still beat you off the line all the way down the road. Stock to stock I've beaten gsrs, celicas.. gsrs only gain near the end but I've gained enough jump from them that it was a clear victory.

Not taking credit from your victory just stating facts... grats again.

I have a bit more than I/H/E. Not saying that any of it does anything for hp like the SS, prolight fly-wheel, clutch, engine mount inserts (those do help launches and second gear shift traction significantly), sticky tires (but the PSI was cranked up to 45 from autoX so I am betting that did not help much), and I have shaved around 50 or so lbs (I was atleast 50lbs heavier than the driver of the Jetta though).

The turbo doesn't have to be upgraded for you to hear it spool really loudly. A friend of mine owns a 98 Mitsu GSX and we recently added a Injen Intake to it. That thing sounds like a monster now. We took it out for a spin and it was all normal. We busted a U-turn to head back to my house and god damn we heard it. We though we messed up on the install but yeah it was just the ECU getting used to more airflow. If the Jetta was chipped and had an upgraded turbo then you would not stand a chance against it. I'm sorry but that is a fact.

On a 1.8T, the intake gets about 5 hp, and the exhaust (turbo back gets about 15-25, depending on cat).

Now, a K04 with all the goodies required to use it properly would give you this, as quoted by APR, "This kit makes solid gains in both horsepower and torque. With no other mods than an APR Turbo-Back Exhaust, the kit made 242hp/268lb-ft on 91 octane gas, and 245hp/275lb-ft on 93 octane gas." This of course would be chip, turbo, fuel add ons, and the stated exhaust. Normally, you have to replace the DV and N75 valve (turbo waste gate controller) since they don't last that long stock and usually go fast after upping the boost.

ok so let me clear something up with you guys. Im not trying to take away from the fact that you probably had this jetta like you say especially because 1.8 t's are somewhat tough to launch. I have a 20th anniversary gti with carbonio cold air intake and a hks ssqv as well as a ghl 3 inch exhaust turbo -back and finally i am chipped with giac's newest x+ software. I run a consistent 13.9 to 14.2. After my intake as my first mod i did chip and if this jetta even had chip and nothing more then i am sorry but it would not have even been close. I think this guy had a dv and intake and possibly a muffler or something because with those mods i can see your civic keepin up with a decent launch but truthfully beyond that he would walk you quite hard just chipping either the 150 hp or 180 hp version of our cars puts us in a large increase in boost from 8 to 12 psi to 18 to 22 psi and especially with torque i mean after chip if he launches somewhat decently i would estimate a 1.5 to 3 car jump right away to about 40 mph i could see maybe your car keepin the distance until 65 or 70 but honestly once we chip its pretty much useless for a lightly modded civic to keep up in any way
