Integra Type R vs teh EssEye of DOOM
I had an interesting run in with a lightly moded Integra Type R last night.
I spent most of yesterday either at work in the morning/afternoon, or helping my fiancée move into her (soon to be our) new apartment. I had made a trip back to my parent’s house, where she was storing a lot of her crap, in order to pick up some of her stuff & bring it back to the apartment.
I get to my rent's place, load the car up with a bunch of clothes, a 27" CRT TV, a few cases of bottle’d water, an Ikea book end, drawers from her oak night stands, a backpack full of pharmacy text books (read: HEAVY AS ****) and a bunch of other odds & ends. After all that BS (and grabbing some free food for my self of course) I hopped on the 805 North ho head over to the new apartment (for you SD guys, over by Qualcom Stadium).
On My way there I pass up a very nice looking, almost flawless, Phoenix Yellow Integra Type R. A very rare case indeed, since it didn’t have any stickers or other tarded up ****. It even had the stock gunmetal rims. The only visible mods being a nice sounding exhaust, rear lower tie bar, and a lowered suspension (upon hearing the car at WOT though, I know for a fact that he had at least an intake, and am more then willing to bet also a header if not more).
He is going pretty slowly in the "almost" slow lane (one over from), so I too slow down, move over a lane, and pace him ‘till he looked over. As soon as he did though, he blipped his throttle and got on the gas a bit. We tried to line up a few times right away, but there was a bit of traffic up ahead making it rather unsafe to do so. We started what seemed to be a clean run, but that got aborted like the bastard child of a crack *****…
…I had stuck it in 4th (when I should have been in 3rd for optimal acceleration) and got on it, where as the ITR most defiantly dropped down to 3rd. What was interesting though, was that although I wasn’t in VTEC at that point, he wasn’t really pulling on me… for the entire blink of an eye that we were on it anyway…
…after a half hearted 4th gear “run”, all of about 3 seconds, I pulled in behind him and followed till the freeway opened up again.
Finally we got a break (even though there was very light traffic we were sort of "boxed in" if you will). I moved over to the fast lane and put it in 4th although he was pacing a few cars back. I just assumed he wanted to go from a lower speed so I too slowed down and we got even.
Turns out I was right.
He looks over at me, I stick the shifter into the 3rd gear, (we are moving at ~65MPH at this point) and wait for his signal. As soon as I hear wail of intake and exhaust next to me, I floor it.
Immediately I start to pull on the guy. As 3rd gear quickly winds out I look over to see that I had already put some length between our previously dead even cars.
4th gear comes and my pull is no longer as "strong", but I was still making decent progress in crating a larger and larger gap between our two cars. I don’t take 4th gear to fuel cut, but I do take it up to 100 or so MPH, by which point I had put 2+ cars between the ITR and my self.
By this point I had gone out of my way to pursue this little contest of speed, missing my freeway connection. I slowed back down to the speed limit, as did the ITR, then I made a quick decision to take the next exit in order to get back on the south bound side (it would be a while before another exit).
As I passed the ITR I gave the dude a thumbs up, but I’m not sure he saw it through 3 lanes of darkness and my window tint.
All in all I fell that was a very good run and indicative of the progress I have made with my most recent modifications.
I can now refer back to a race I had with an ITR a while ago before I had added the cams and increased the CR. He had an intake, JDM ITR header and a cat back exhaust. We were dead even for all 3 of our runs. 2 from a stop and once from 60MPH. All to ~ 130MPH. I think that an interesting comparison between now and then. Of course the best will be when I take my car to the same dyno I had it on when my car was in said state of tune later this month.

Cliffs Notes: From 65MPH to 100+MPH I took an Integra Type R with at LEAST I/E by 2+ car lengths.

on an unrelated note, here is a video of an ITR (same color as the one I raced, but not the same car) with just a CAI running the 1/4 at sea level.
