just tires, how hard can an ex turn?
just tires, how hard can an ex turn?
I have an 04 ex, which I love for being a fun to drive economy car. I have never "raced" anyone except myself hehe. Though on my way home tonight right before the exit ramp I was passed in the sholder by a carrara 4s. As he butted in front of me to the ramp, I figured what the hell and popped it into D3 lol. Spareing you the exciting details. I pulled him in the whole way around the ramp (the back of his car squirming like crazy for the last half of the loop) Then the road went straight and his warp drive kicked in or something
I am rather shocked and not sure if I should belive it.
So stock ex with Falken Ziex Ze 512, fronts at 35psi rear at 30, vs http://www.caranddriver.com/article....rticle_id=9399 on a broken up turn ramp.
The link says the porche can do 0.9g on the skidpad, so the real question is, can my rig match that????

Are you serious?
No you didn’t. He wasn’t trying. Believe it.
And to answer your question, no.
Honestly, do you think changing your tires out for some entry level performance summer tire is going to make up for a far far far far far far far inferior chassis/suspension/drive train set-up? Pssst... His stock tires are better then yours.

civic ownz porsche
look at it this way: if you had as much invested in your civic as he has invested in his porsche, you'd be wiping the floor with his car all day long... and you'd be getting laid alot more.

haha ok! all I know is that I came up on him in the turn and his car did not look planted. Maybe he was just jerking the wheel as he switched from rearview mirror view to road ahead view.
So additional question, what does a stock civic pull on a skidpad? and what might it pull with tires that arn't crap?

If you think a civic can pull more *** then a Porsche, you need to stop watching F&F.

man, I should have expected this thread to go
Well then I ask that everyone ignore the whole porche bit, and help me come up with some numbers!
skidpad numbers for civic with stock suspension, please.
If anyone else posts anything that is not an answer or contribution to my question the SOMEONE PLEASE LOCK IT OR GET RID OF IT, because its sending lots of useless notification emails to me.
Thank you and have a nice day.

You can’t estimate cornering grip like that, it just doesn’t work that way. You list lateral g's. For what? A 200ft diameter skid pad? A 100ft? A 500 ft? In the wet? Dry? What kind of pavement? Is there dirt? Are the shocks worn at all? How about the springs? Are you sure the spring and shock rates are exactly he same from civic to civic? What if it corners harder on the skidpad but does worse in the slalom? And what if the moisture was a bit higher on one day of testing and much lower for testing on another car? That will Effect over traction quite a bit.
Numbers don’t = reality.
BTW, there is no standard of measurement between magazines either. Some base on skidpad others slalom, others a combination and still some have different size kid pads and different lengths of space between the slalom cones.
And even still, max lateral G's don’t have a direct relation on how well a car can handle. Not by a long shot. I believe Road & Track listed the McLaren F1 @ .88g on a w200ft lateral skidpad, yet it’s probably the quintessential road going sports car. I also promise that it will out-lap a Mk IV Supra turbo that posted a .98 on the same 200ft skidpad.
Think about that.
This is a retarded post in every respect.

Thank you ramones
and NAstage2, points taken, true numbers don't = reality, but they are a nice place to start. As for the rest of it, I wasn't asking about overall handleing or slalom type stuff. I asked how hard an ex can turn, and mentioned skid pad as that seems to be the best representation for an on ramp. But thank you for actually contributing non the less.

Depends Greatly on the tires run. You'd be supprised what a civic can do properly set up and driven. (I've beaten Many A porsche at autocross, and Passed a few on road courses, including a GT3. I was rideing his *** through the twisty parts of the track so he was kind (and smart) enough to give me a point by on the straight).
You can easlily tune a civic to handle as well if not better then a porsche, being able to drive it to that level is another matter. The bigger problem with the civic is that just because you can pull more G's in a turn and theoretically have a Higher MPH mid turn, the porsche will more then make up for it in the next straight....thanks to it actually having power.

G's are the measure of force a car exerts in a turn (G's are in reference to Gravity on earth. 1 G = the amount of force the earth is exerting on you as you sit in your chair, Double that force would be 2 G's Tripple would be 3 G's ect ect ect...) Most production cars have trouble reaching 1 G in a turn (Very few actually can in stock form)
Why they matter.... well that depends on what you are doing with the car. Having a car that can pull more G's in a turn theoretically means taht car can carry more speed through that turn = cornering faster. Problem with this is (as measured on Stock cars by magizies and such) that the G's a car can pull in a turn is ultimatly determined by what tires that car is running. (There are other factors, but none plays as big a roll as Tires). So, Just because magazine A found that car X can pull .99G's in a turn and Car Y can only pull .95... doesnt really tell me much, simply because they were running different tires. (Honda BTW is notorious for under tireing their cars stock, S2000 excluded). So dont take G #'s too seriously when compairing cars.
From the linked article in the original post : "We're not sure that makes up for the pricey fact that the tires didn't make it that distance: By 13,302 miles, the rears were shot. So we swapped the Pirelli P Zero Asimmetricos for four Yokohama AVS Sport tires. They cost $920 installed."
These guys tested the carrera 4s long-term and the stock tires tend to get used up really fast...
Your Azenis are near the best reasonable tires you can put on a vic, so yeah you can most definetly pull nicer than a heavy-*** rear-engined overpriced german car. Tires & suspension goes a helluva long way in curbs.
Plus it depends a whole ****ing lot of the porsche had its traction control on. It can give an insane advantage while on, in the hands of the average driver. If you heard wheelspin AND you pulled better than him it was probably off, who knows.

^traction control will actually make you slower through a turn Vs some one who actually knows what they are doing. Its basically there to stop Idiots from getting in to to much trouble rather then allowing you to take a turn quicker.
^ yep the best way to take a turn is with just a tad of oversteer. This heats up and uses the tires more, however. I meant that the average driver with tc off will spin the tires more than necessary and simply get off-track easily, especially when exiting a turn.
I think that there is this common misconception that civic have incredible handling. The news is that Stock they don't. Yes they may handle slightly better than the average FWD econo car, but any actual sports car it is not even comparable. The civic did have great handling in the 6th gens, but they threw all of that away when they changed suspensions with the 7thgens. Yes there are those that spend alot of $ on 7thgen suspension and make a good handling car (myself included). However in a road course or autoX event, even a finely tuned 7thgen (boilermaker) does not stand out above the rest AT ALL. Infact in the STS class it still only compeates with neon ACRs, Ford probe Gts, ford focuses, 6thgens, and is at a disadvantage to older hatches and 6thgen SIs. What does stand out is the driver and that is why boilermaker and a handful of others can take a 7thgen and outdrive a real performance car. And to those of you who do not have the experience and skill that they do to attempt to out handle a real performance car is making yourself look stupid, and is asking to wreck.........so I would not suggest it
