encounter with a Cobalt SS
I was driving down a 3 lane road today in milwaukee, and saw a car a ways up ahead I didn't recognize. He looked to be driving a bit spiritedly through traffic, so I stepped it up to find out what it was.
Eventually I got closer and saw it was a new Cobalt SS. I kinda fell in behind the guy, and maneuvered with him through traffic. Eventually I was getting to where I had to turn, so I started to move over to the turn lane. He moved up ahead of me and there was a car between us.
We both turned, and quickly found ourselves ahead of traffic. I moved next to him, and he kinda sped up, then slowed down. As we came over the hill, we hit a light that turned red.
I was next to him and looked over but he wasn't looking at me. So of course I'm kinda wondering if he's going to go or not. I quickly get my answer when I hear him rev a bit as the cross traffic light turns yellow. I bring my revs up a bit, but only drop at 4000rpm just for a slight jump. It sounds like he launched a bit more aggressively than me, and his intial lead would indicate he did.
He gets the initial jump on me, about a 1/2 car length. I hit 6000rpm in 1st gear, and quickly pull back that distance and then some. Into 2nd I get a bark from the tires and a bit of a jump. I start to pull decently, and by 60mph I have gained about 2 cars. I go into 3rd and continue to pull. By the time I shift to 4th at 80mph I have put him into my rear view mirror pretty clearly. If I had to guess I'd say 5 or 6 cars by 85mph. I shut down and he drives by with a quick thumbs up and then turns off at the following road.
I definitely think these cars will be able to give the SRT4 a run for its money. And for a stock S2000, I wouldn't take them too lightly either.

I'd take one as a daily driver when GM does a 4 grand discount on them like they always do with thier cars
Hell buy a corvette right now and you get a grand back
I was reading motortrend and they did a head to head comparison between the srt-4 and colbalt SS. The srt-4 beats it to 60 but in the quarter they are dead equal! Can't get more than a drivers race than that.

Yeah...nicely done, would have love to see it.
Regarding shifting, I go 6k all the way til 4th gear when driving a little crazy. I'm afraid something will go wrong if I go higher than that.

That lateral G isn't looking too bad considering the chasis structure. I think the SRT-4 will continue to reign as king of the craptastic domestic straightline cars, seems like theres just more aftermarket support and the prices and options in the Stage II/III upgrade kits are impressive.

you mean 8000 rpm???
WTF? I'm actually a big fan of the cobalt. (minus the wing on the SS), but how the hell does it even come close to keeping up with an S2000? Were you playing with this guy?
Cobalt Weight=2991, Horsepower=205, Torque=200 lb-ft
S Weight=2835, Horsepower=240, Torque 162 lb-ft
Is it the torque from the supercharger? I realize you beat him, but I'm thinking you should have BEAT HIM. What gives?

keep in mind the mag's ran a 14.4. I imagine real drivers will go even better. maybe even into the 13's. i also hear these are dyno'ing higher than they should, meaning they are underrated.

100mph trap should be good for a 14.0 maybe high 13 with a killer 60ft. Srt's(4 in my car club alone) and TC's are everywhere here. Havent seen any cobalt's yet.
