Talking Test drove the GTI

Well I test drove my friend's 20th AE GTI 1.8T today! OMG the power, let me tell you it's owns up on any other civic I've driven including the Si! Freaking recaro seats, brembo brakes, 18inch BBS rims, factory lip kit, blacked headlights and all the other goodies that I can't include in this page. Well, his had six gears b/c it was the 20th AE and believe me, it went from 0-60 like no other! So fast, it pushed me back into the seats when I revved it to 4K rpm. The handling was superb due to the modified suspensions and lowered ride...OMG I drool in envy! When my friend drove it and floored it with the ASR off, it freaking hauled A$$! Well, one thing I can assure you, there were no gear grinds like all the nit-picking VW owners out there...or maybe cause it was the 20th AE and they changed the stock gears...but I had no complaints...other features included limo tint, alarm, and modified exhaust. If you have 20K, buy it b/c it feels like a 40K car!

ah Yes the GTI......... Ever tried to push one through a turn? Plow city. Though the 1.8T is a much better balanced car then the VR6. its tough to get past the primitive rear suspension... Semi Independant tortion beam rear suspension.....

umm GTIs are not slow compared to stock civics, yea of course if u turbo ur vic or swap it then I'm sure u can consider it slow. My friend's suspension was nice because it was modified, so it wasn't the stock 1.8T suspension...and for a price of a R32 I would get the STI

Drive a chipped 1.8t, it's a different car. One thing to keep in mind. The GTI is good for over 400+whp on stock internals. For all the turbo guys saying the car is slow, it's B.S. I can put a T3 on just like you, but I can turn the boost up to 20+psi on stock everything.

naptowncivic, I'm not in to straight line Racing. So how much HP you can squeaze out of it is relitivley un-important. what is important is the Suspension, and there is only so much you can do to imporve a torsion beam suspension....

Heres a little info on it.
Torsion beam suspension
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Torsion beam suspension, also known as a torsion bar, is a vehicle suspension system. One end of a long metal bar is attached firmly to the vehicle chassis; the opposite end has a lever, perpendicular to the bar, that is attached to the axle of a wheel. As the wheel travels up and down it "twists" the bar along its axis to provide the spring force. This system was used extensively in European cars as well as by Packard in the 1950's and Chrysler throughout the 1960's.

The main advantages of torsion beam suspension are durability, easy ride height adjustability, and a smooth ride. One major disadvantage is the lack of a progressive spring rate which can lead to sloppy handling.

Some vehicles use torsion bars to implement automatic leveling with sensors and motors to dynamically adjust the torsion in each bar in response to changing loads and road conditions.

A variation on this theme is often called a twist beam suspension, as is found on VW Golfs and other economy cars. It usually consists of trailing arms connecting to a twistable beam that runs from one side of the car to the other. This design's advantages are mainly space and cost, and does not offer the performance or ride height adjustability of torsion bar suspension.

a civic si or rsx reg will walk all over a 1.8 GTI for less price. Also our cars will own them ona road course because like zzyzx said the suspensions on those is extremely primative. That vech ceases to impress me at all.
I will take my turbo 7th gen..
also to depict how slow they are with a turbo might I add! I smoked one in my momthers rx330 SUV! His gti was modded too this was a race to about 45... funny cars

"a civic si or rsx reg will walk all over a 1.8 GTI for less price". OH really. How many Si's or base rsx's run 14.9 @ 94 stock. That what my car ran bone stock. I never once said anything about suspension, I agree with you on that. But to think a RSX or Si can walk a 1.8t is crazy. It's a drivers race between the 1.8t and the RSX-S. Once chipped the 1.8t will walk all over a RSX-S. You people forget about torque. Thats what wins races. My car with just a chip and exhaust traps at 100mph.

See, The type of racing I do (autocross) has rules for every class. I run STS, and I'm pretty sure the GTi 1.8T is legal for the class (I know the VR6 is) With in the limitations of the rules, the 1.8 doesn't stand much of a chance. Hell, My 01 Civic doesnt stand much of a chance, nationally at least. Ran it at the nationals down in Phoenix and at the end of the 1st day I was 1 second off pace. So you see, spouting out how much HP can be gained by chiping and such doesnt reall mean that much to me because you cant do most of it to run this class. Most of that stuff you cant do untill the Modifieds (you'd end up in D-Modified) and even then, Do you think a GTi 1.8T with 365 HP can out run a Westfield 7 with 250+hp and weighing in at 1,000 LBS?

My point is that the GTi would be a fun car, but for what I do with my car.... Its either To much or not enough. Same thing Happened to the WRX, that thing isnt even compeditive in its own stock class (gets stomped on by Integra R and BMW 330ci) and when you modifiy it you jump to eight STX (where it does relitivly well) or ESP (where it has to compete against Mustang Cobra Rs and modified to hell EVO 8s.....)

This is what a 1.8t can do with a t3/t4 turbo upgrade. Stock internals, on street tires.

Its a great car just better cars out for the price. Now a 1.8t chipped walking all over a type S is like saying hey why not make that type S a type R? Becuase you know that doesnt take much engine work to do.
we are comparing stock... Besides for stock modding the reg RSX is better becuase you can boost higher than its older more expensive high comp brother.
all in all they are good car sbut MSRp it is hardly worth price. The Vr6 **** I know I can pick an evo 8 up for less

Well gee, like i said anybody can go fast with a little fan forcing air into the engine. Take the VW 1.8 before they put the turbo on it, take that against a Honda B18.... what now, ok, we'll even give VW a cc advantage, let'em use the 2.0 agains the B18.... what now, its like saabs, theyre dogs without the turbo. if your motor cant do it on its own, shouldnt that say somehting?

damn guys I'm not telling you to compare cars on this thread, I told you what I test drive and to me it was amazing. I don't think you can get side curtain airbags, side airbags, front airbags, recaro racing seats, brembo brakes, 18inch BBS rims, bodykit, limo tint, rear spoiler, blacked headlights, aftermarket exhaust, sunroof, ASR, traction control, 6 speed transmission, and ABS and much much more that I can't recall for only $20K. Of course that's with the used 8K mile 2003 model version, but still worth every damn penny. Compare it only with performance, then I can understand it's not the best of it's class, but compare it with every single safety features/gadgets with more than decent performance for the price, than you got urself a great car.

btw, im not saying i totally dislike the VeeDubs, but my big complaints are

A) reliability
B) price
C) weight
D) interior asthetics

what does impress me is
A) the cargor room with the seats UP!
B) the ride
C) ahhh, the wonderfull whirr of the VR6, i absolutly think that the VR6 is one of the best sounding V6's, with THE BEST sonding I6 going to BMW(sorry off topic)

Funny, People dont reallize that even with AWD, its still the tires that pull you through a turn. The Drivetrain (FWD,RWD,AWD) only determin the Power on Characteristics of the car. also, In a purely performance application AWD can actually be a Liability.
